this was sort of a "twist” in prometheus, that the old fuck was Peter Weyland, that he faked his death before boarding the Prometheus

genuinely why did he fake his death?? this never fucking made snese to me outside of being a plot contrivance to cover for the no one giving a fuck about the failure of the Promtetheus mission

edit: in fact if the motherfucker was SO CONFIDENT that the engineers could make him immortal, WHY DID HE FAKE HIS DEATH??? like was it to cover up that he was on the Prometheus???

edit: edit: ok my new schizo theory after thinking about this is that the reports of Weyland faking his death, were actually manufactured by David, i.e. Weyland in his cryo-stasis wasn’t aware of the “Weyland is dead!” news and David did it because he PLANNED on Weyland dying out there on the Prometheus mission

Did they ever explain why Weyland hired the beer league to be his crew on this super important mission using the most advance technology humanity has? I would presume this would be the one time Weyland would not cheap out on labour costs.

Because he needed an excuse to be gone for several years, and he can’t exactly say “hey guys I’m actually on the archeology boat with you to visit the super secret aliens!!” until they’re already there and they can’t exactly turn the boat around to go back home so he can go RP with the Aliens. I, for some reason, decided to avoid mentioning some of the spoilers but this should still make sense.

it obviously can’t have been too secret of a plan, because following the failure of Weyland and Weyland JR to return, the next ship to visit the Engineers has an armed escort team. Although they don’t visit them intentionally, i wouldn’t put it past Weyland Corp

Partly, it is told to us that he appreciates Shaw and her lover (don’t remember his name) because they also believe in the concept of an alien race who’ve lived alongside humans, as does he.

The other part is more linked to the running theme of selfishness VS selflessness throughout the movie: Weyland’s quest for immortality is entirely selfish, he sees the crew as entirely expendable and believes whatever Aliens he finds will just happily serve him and assist him, he sees no risk from them or the expendable stupid crew he brings with them. Why waste some expensive PMCs when he can bring simpletons?

You can even extend this again to your question RE the equipment - he buys all the best shit for himself, especially that expensive surgery bed the crew aren’t allowed to use, and the rest of the crew get scraps, although this might be a stretch.
