Field Log: Sky Howler **FIELD LOG: SKY HOWLER**

Specimen Code: WY-LV-921-AV4
Classification: Avian Carnivore – Aerial Tier-2

Initial Contact Notes:
Observed during D-9 aerial survey over Rift Shelf Alpha. One specimen breached canopy and struck a Cervid below in a precision dive. High-altitude flight observed despite strong crosswinds.

Morphology:

  • Wingspan ~4m
  • Secondary gliding membranes emit low-frequency shimmer
  • Dual vocal sacs enable echolocation-like navigation

Behavioral Notes:

  • Solitary, highly territorial
  • Roosts in cliff overhangs, difficult to detect via drone
  • Emits hunting calls that scramble short-range wireless systems intermittently

Recommendations:
Avoid patrol flight paths near Echo Cliffs during planetary dusk. Potential weaponization of call frequencies under review by R&D.

Field Log: Fjord Lurker **FIELD LOG: FJORD LURKER**

Specimen Code: WY-LV-921-SC7
Classification: Semi-Aquatic Scavenger

Initial Contact Notes:
First recorded near a damaged outpost module. Lurker was observed consuming a Rift Strider carcass. When approached, it exhibited threat displays and retreated into a crevice.

Morphology:

  • ~1.5m body length
  • Multiple nested mandibles; suction-capable oral disk
  • Flexible, cartilaginous spine ideal for confined environments

Behavioral Notes:

  • Primarily nocturnal; drawn to blood, fuel, and heat
  • Mimicry observed—echoed human distress sounds on one occasion
  • Pack behavior suspected in deeper rift zones

Recommendations:
Install motion-activated sonic deterrents near facilities. Use incineration on contact; tissue shows parasitic resistance to cold sterilization.

Field Log: Rift Strider **FIELD LOG: RIFT STRIDER**

Specimen Code: WY-LV-921-AMP2
Classification: Amphibious Stalker – Pack Hunter

Initial Contact Notes:
First encountered near geothermal vents during Survey 3-C. Specimens moved in coordinated fashion and exhibited group tactics in hunting Icebacks.

Morphology:

  • ~3m shoulder height
  • Six multi-jointed limbs; friction-padded claws
  • Thick exoskeletal plates with bio-luminescent markings on ventral side

Behavioral Notes:

  • Hunts in triads; ambush behavior recorded
  • Day-night cycle affects activity rate (higher aggression during nights)
  • Emotive intelligence: observed basic tool use and pathfinding

Recommendations:
Deploy drones for motion tracking. Arm perimeter guards with high-velocity flechettes. Full autopsy needed; exoskeletal plating resists some conventional ammo.

Field Report: Glacier Maw **FIELD LOG: GLACIER MAW**

Specimen Code: WY-LV-921-AP1
Classification: Deepwater Apex Predator

Initial Contact Notes:
Destroyed one aquatic drone near Abyssal Canyon Point. Later confirmed via sonar and remote harpoon cam. Enormous thermal signature.

Morphology:

  • 15–20m length
  • Six-jaw maw, secondary lures emit infrared heat pulses
  • Electro-sensitive skin; glides using minimal movement in trench zones

Behavioral Notes:

  • Ambush apex; attacks without warning
  • Body temperature drops near stasis between meals
  • Regenerative tissue; harpoons recovered with melted barbs

Recommendations:
DO NOT ENGAGE. Avoid trench patrols unless mission-critical. Observation from high-orbit drone clusters only. Biotech team requests live sample (denied by Colonial Command).

Field Report: Shivermane **FIELD LOG: SHIVERMANE**

Specimen Code: WY-LV-921-LP9
Classification: Land Apex Predator – Stealth-Class

Initial Contact Notes:
Tracking team Bravo lost visual after minor snowfall. Recovered footage shows a Shivermane shadowing them for 11 minutes before attack. Minimal thermal footprint.

Morphology:

  • Quadruped; 2.5m body length(suspected larger)
  • Translucent fur with light-diffusing layers
  • Retractable claws and triple-jointed hindlegs for vertical ambushes

Behavioral Notes:

  • Solo hunter; highly territorial
  • Emits subsonic growl that causes nausea in smaller mammals (and some humans)
  • Shows interest in observation drones but has not attacked them

Recommendations:
Issue personnel neural dampeners for anti-nausea protection. Arm recon teams with thermal optics. Project Hunter’s Veil approved for trials (subject to board review).

FIELD EXCERPT – WY-LV-921 INCIDENT REPORT **Authored by: Internal Historian (PMC Archives, Division 7C)** **Subject: Discovery and First Encounter with Apex Predator “Shivermane”**

During an expedition beyond the Weyland Isles Sector, in a region long thought lost to navigational drift, a new planetary body was discovered in early 2173. The operation was led by 1st Lt. Miyasaki Langley (Weyland PMC), accompanied by a team of scientists and corporate assets. The planet, later designated WY-LV-921 (Glaciem Rift), was colonized by Weyland-Yutani in late 2173 through early 2174. Initial colonists consisted primarily of W-Y infrastructure workers, followed by science and security divisions.

While conducting a routine sweep of the Echo Cliffs—a known hunting ground for the elusive predator classified as the Shivermane—Lt. Langley, seven security specialists, and one scientific observer were ambushed by the creature.

It struck without warning.

Invisible to thermal and motion scanners, the Shivermane’s presence was first noted when a team member vomited violently inside their helmet—an apparent neurological response to the predator’s low-frequency subsonic growl. Chaos followed. In seconds, the team was reduced from nine to three: the scientist, Dr. Renolds; Lt. Langley; and Corporal Tanaka.

Panicked, Renolds attempted to flee back to the transports—located over a mile away. He was never seen alive again.

Outgunned and unable to track their attacker, Langley and Tanaka made their final stand. Back-to-back, Tanaka wielded a combat shotgun while Langley carried a Gorham-Class M79A3 hunting rifle—a W-Y prototype built for large game on Frontier Worlds. Firing 13.7mm cryo-stabilized tungsten-jacket rounds, the weapon had recently been outfitted with Glaciem Cryo-Core enhancements following mining operations in the region.

In a moment of grim resolve, Tanaka broke formation and engaged the Shivermane at close range. He landed two blows—one with a combat knife to the ribcage, another with an icepick to the creature’s mane. But the effort cost him his life. The Shivermane disemboweled him in a rage, killing him instantly.

His sacrifice, however, bought Langley the time he needed.

Fighting nausea, eyes locked on the shadows, Langley leveled Gorham’s Rifle and fired. The round struck true, blowing through the creature’s flank. The Shivermane collapsed with an agonized roar, thrashing before going still.

Langley returned alone to the RT Series transport group. On his way he found all that remained of Renolds was viscera and plastic—his Weyland intersystem call-card embedded in the icy stone, labeled “RENOLDS”, splattered with blood and gore.

The Shivermane’s corpse was later recovered and taxidermized; its massive form now dominates the wall of Langley’s personal office—a grisly testament not only to the lethal unknowns of the frontier and the Galaxy, but a solemn tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and unflinching service of the men who stood beside him on WY-LV-921.
