I get it, if you want to do something experimental with kilo and oscar, but charlie has had just as much of a history as an “assault” squad as alpha and delta, and it really feels like a “oh hey charlie mains, fuck you in particular, lose members and a spec for no gain” situation.
Like why did this have to happen to charlie squad? why is the only squad I play now just weaker compared to alpha and delta? why us in particular and not delta?
Eh, the biggest issue I had in the first thread about A.S.S. and the one I really cared about most was that:
But, this isnt the case anymore, charlie is as far as I’m aware now always unlocked. My main issue was that in the lowpop slums I’d never be able to touch charlie again, and as it stands that isnt the case.
My opinions about A.S.S. is otherwise its good. I just didn’t like the largely pointless effort spent on burying charlie to only what is these days, highpop.
Also RIP Kolton Murphy again, we only just unfroze them a few days ago
Honestly, I mean no disrespect when I say this but I don’t think you’ve genuinely read about what ASS is supposed to be nor played it as intended.
ASS is not being implemented for ‘balance’ reasons really at all, at least from what I’ve read and seen. Frankly (I may be wrong) but I don’t think it actually reduces the amount of specialty roles in play.
ASS encourages more variance and difference in strategies and raises the RP quality by a ton. Frankly, it works extremely well. I have NEVER had a moment as SL where I genuinely felt immersed and like I was making a difference as a leader until we had ASS come around. Having these small squads that are focused on smaller objectives or that can do more surgical things is an overall plus for the game. Its an opt in system, which means that the people playing in these squads are more than likely to be willing to engage in that level of roleplay and depth.
Charlie hasn’t been ‘wiped out’ or ‘removed’, if anything in my opinion it has been greatly improved. Charlie always has been the more RP oriented squad and this change reinforces that along with bringing in more options for good roleplay.
At the end of the day, the players will shift to whatever group reinforces the experience they’re looking for. We’re already seeing a large majority of Charlie players (and other RP/objective focused players) moving to Kilo/Oscar/Charlie BECAUSE they have that reinforcement of being with like minded players looking for the same experience. At the end of the day, Charlie squad isn’t just the color or name of the squad, its the culture that its developed overtime and that will continue to develop with this change for the better.
If Squad unlock order is fixed, I’m full into ASS I think.
Mind you, I’m Alpha main, but if a squad had to get reduced numbers to be the specialists, it should be Charlie.
Alpha is for the default experience, for new players and players willing to corral the newbies around
Bravo is Chill Team 6, playing runescape on their other monitor while pretending to mind FOB
Delta is for throwing away your headset and ungaballing, to death or victory
Charlie is or was veteran Alpha gameplay. Smart enough to pick a different color, willing to RP a bit more in downtime/breakfast, and able to both follow orders and know the map more than Private Bald. Downing their numbers and making them the specialist squad will hopefully reinforce those traits. Current problem is that command is bald to anything but ungaball, and defaults to putting special squads on comms, and gameplay isn’t balanced around small skirmishes so long as Queen Screech stands as is. Baby steps though.
We’re discussing how the server is changing and how to adjust our playstyles, not the changes we want to see put into ASS?
Ill start by adressing the topic of the thread, personally i woudlnt lose sleep or shed a single tear over charlie squad geting mugged and left bleeding in the gutter.
Squad identity has been steadily diluted over the years and the biggest looser in this is our beloved Charlie squad.
Sums it up perfectly. Despite the contrast betwen the percived image of Alpha and Delta they still somewhat come to the same conclusion - “i want to work with my squad to survive/win”.
Charlie tends to have veteran players who can hold their own and have a tendency of only interacting with their friends or people they know. Meaning that when you aint part of the inner circle, leading that squad full of AWOL mutes is frustrating and unrewarding and being a regular member means that your mostlikely just going to blend into some other squad or run around with their buddy.
Frankly i dont see how the ASS system can be atributed to be the missing link that would increase the RP value across the board, make marines engage in more teamwork or contribute in a meaningful way to the team effort. You can see it in EVERY squad already, some players will and some wont do what they are ordered to by their leaders and in-character there is not much anyone can do about it. The enitre marine team is an “opt in” system already, up to pretty much XO role, wich is rulebound to take it seriously.
Any talk of “ASS encourages more varied and flexible tactics” is already contradicting itself, as certain roles will be enforced on certain squads to an even higher degree than now.
All the tools to do exactly what the ASS is intented to provide already are in the game.
The fireteams have been in the game for a while and with the recent change to how FTLs have power to pick and choose the men into their teams makes forming smaller units to cover more ground/objectives easier than ever.
Only thing the average squad member has to do is show some initiative, speak up and look for a team - boom - you are already roleplaying by submiting to the chain of command AND looking for a way to contribute to whatever the team/squad is doing. New players can put their backs to eachother and veterans can make magic happen where 4 guys could change the course of the game.
With or without ASS, either way it will come down to Team, Squad and Senior leadership and the players own will to engage with other players.
With ASS the command structure will be made needlessly more complicated, arbitarily chosen roles will be even more calcified to squads and some people will be rubbed the wrong way when they see a squad that they are sentimental about get gutted just for the sake of change.
I dont see what about ASS requires gutting charlie squad’s spec. what is the compelling reason for making me choose between playing spec or chilling with my fellow charlies in charlie squad? why can I not do both? there is no reason we can’t let charlie keep a spec, just a day ago I could roll charlie spec and now I can’t, and my favorite squad has nothing to show for it, we’re just weaker now
Honestly, as a charlie main, I cant say I really mind it as long as it isnt getting obliterated or locked to like ~2 hours of the day when pop hits the requirement. My main complaint is CIC is bald with useing extra squads, although at the same time small squads get flattened by queen scree so.
if anything, segmenting the squads so much and reducing manpower and removing the SGs and specs from the roster, it almost dooms them to be irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, since they won’t be strong enough to do more dangerous tasks, i.e., by removing the base of fire from the squads, they are less flexible because they don’t have the tools to deal with T3s
Charlie is fine, sure you’ll have a smaller squad, it will change but, like look at charlie from 21-22 and from 23-24, both years Charlie changed entirely with new faces.
You’re still going to have the same people playing, you still talk with them, and you can still frag with them.
What the smaller squad does, is enforce better organization - as otherwise, going off alone will just get your squad wiped.
People should stop seeing things as bluntly TDM winning.
Memories are more important. I’d rather be losing and having fun rping banter, then bored out of my mind with the same unga ball and wordless squad mates.
There is a big difference between having fun and losing and just losing, Giving Charlie back some of its presence as an actual squad with an SG but still smaller and more manageable would allow for those fun moments and allow these specialist squads to act independent of the main body and still be a threat to groups of Xenos. If you really think any modern XO or CO player is going to be able to use 3 squads with only riflemen and at half strength effectively i have a bridge to sell you.
