Its really just a case where uttering a slur confers a automatic ban from a member of staff, its not a case where the server automatically bans you, someone has to notice it.
The single only circumstances I can think of a regular player running afoul of the slur rule is if they say the R-word. Personally, I have no issues with that word, but the rules are clear, even if I personally believe we should issue a warning before banning for that word. I do try to exercise discretion in slur issues depending on context (someone yelling the R-word after they were instantly killed by an ally is fairly excusable versus stating it directly to someone as a insult in a calm environment)
IF THEY GO SPASTIC
You know that’s a slur too, right?
It boils down to two metrics:
Is this someone’s identity I’m using as an insult, by virtue of that identity being undesireable or stigmatized.
For example, I’m queer: part of the alphabet mafia and all that. Not a slur. However, if someone called me “you damn queer” with the implication being that queer = bad, now it’s a slur.
However, there may be some words that your friends are okay with hearing. I call my queer friends all kinds of slurs and vice-versa in fun. That’s where we get to
Could you scream in out of a window and people would understand you’re trying to be friendly.
If you drive past a bunch of people on the sidewalk and shout “WHAT A BUNCH OF SILLIES!” they’ll think you’re unhinged but not dangerous. If you drive by shouting “HEY RET----S!” . . . they might worry you’re going to hate-crime them. Your boss would send you to HR for calling a coworker one of these things. Your grandmother would gasp and call you by your middle name. You’d flunk the first date.
There’s almost two hundred people on the server at peak hours, there is not nearly enough time for everyone to investigate whether or not each person has been the victim of slurs and harassment before, hasn’t but doesn’t like them, or is ambivalent but still shouldn’t get in the habit of using them.
Ngl that shit had been up there for several months before I realised it was there, and I only noticed it BECAUSE someone on the forums posted about it. I can guarantee you loads of people who’ve played for a long time just filter out half the stuff on the bumper as white noise.
Yeah no offense the tiny chat text that barely loads half the time, doesn’t let you know when it’s changed, and nobody actually reads is not the best way to communicate stuff
Ah i was under impression that it was literally automatic " Usage of slurs IC/OOC on the server will result in a 7 day ban, automatically." seem the rule was just worded a bit poorly.
That’s really the only reason I was having such a issue here. i still don’t like the rule how it is but at lest it not as draconian as i thought it was.
general rule of thumb imo is if its targeting someone for something race, gender, sexuality, or mental health related - its best to veer on the safe side. im not trying to see people get banned for slipping up or whatever but I genuinely do see a hardline rule for this stuff being the only viable way to stop this community degrading back into something very unpleasant for particular groups of people. Think: can I say this word in front of a group of strangers in casual conversation IRL with no repercussions, does this word target a particular group of people?
Its not difficult to understand, I have my disagreements with some of the things we allow and dont allow but its really not that deep or difficult to comprehend, words arent a landmine, you just want to say anything you want without consequence.
If you’re that pressed by not being able to say slurs that most people in public would look at you funny for saying anyway then maybe you should do some self reflection.
Is the R word a widely considered horrible slur? No, but its a rule in the server and its likely not changing anytime soon.
i think we’ve had our fun here. the policy isn’t changing, and there won’t be a list. might be an automatic filter when someone (inevitably me) gets around to it
