Tbh I only play CM once in 2016 or 17, when sseth made that video. I remember CIC was fully glassed or something like that. Damn I wish I didn’t drop the game only to come to 2023 to play again.

I watched alot of Tex’s videos it was fun to watch.

I actually liked having to put some thought into nest design

It wasn’t just a checkerboard either, since caps burst faster the more of them were visible to each other, you had people making cool designs that secured caps so they couldn’t easily break out or free each other, but could still see each other (and also talk to each other).

Nest breakouts might’ve sucked but the actual mechanics otherwise were great.

That sounds like such a neat mechanic. Puts more thought into hive building rather than the hive host pile.

Be neat if we could bring the hive escaping thing back somehow? With a bonus for having a host burst on hive weeds might work.

Oh wow, i know I’ll list off shit that’s probably already been mentioned, but oh well.

Remember when helmets would protect against facehuggers?
Remember when everyone had to sit for briefing and if you didn’t you were arrested?
Remember the Rasputin?
Remember setting up the supermatter engine?
Remember setting up the supermatter for self destruct? Desperately holding it with your fellow MTs as you birthed a star into being behind you?
Remember the Req line?
Remember only having ONE map to play on?
Remember freezing to death on the (once)new map?
Remember the Sulaco? (Best ship)
Remember debrief?
Remember when destroying weed nodes did nothing special?
Remember when shooting xenos, the bullets slowed them down?
Remember having to wash your hands for surgery?
Remember mutinies?
Remember when the only doors* you could make in a cade line were displaced girders?

Do you remember when people used to hide facehuggers in lockers?

Remember when you could stick dead facehuggers on your face to prank people?

Placing huggers was instant and drones would combat hug any marines that got a little too close to the front.
Marines killing each other just to have the overpowered Barrel Charger attachment.
SLs and Engies having to place a beacon instead of a laze for supplies to the front and OBs
marines being husked from being flamed or direct shots from boiler globs making them unable to be revived.
Medics/Doctors being able to pump you full of chems so you’d heal while you were dead. making medics able to heal multiple people by just giving them pills and reviving later.
Xenos having the age system where you had to wait 5 minutes to be slightly combat effective, and if you lived a whole hour you were given the prime status and could tank anything marines shot at you. (queens and chargers were essentially unkillable)
admemes were WAY more fun and used to spawn in the clown gun (an infamous silly orange pistol that would make a loud honking noise and was able to 2 shot queen and T3s) with a whole clown outfit which you were obligated to wear
4 hour rounds which are unheard of now and not considered fun???
M44s being able to kill T2s
Lurkers used to be called Hunters and are used when admins want to spawn NPC xenos
Carriers being a waste of a T3 slot and dying like fruit flies
marines actually dependent on the Longstreet Tank, and xenos complaining that they’re losing to a tank when they get run over (it’s a fucking tank what do you expect?)
admins spawning themselves as medical bots that would take the roll of medic if there were barely any for the round
And lastly marines being nested on floor and marines could escape nests. forcing players like sentinels and stay at hive drones to play babysitter and die to marines carrying M40s and shotguns blasting the hive from the inside killing the other captured marines or freeing them.

I remembered a couple old ones with medical.

The shooting range used to be where the gym is… so medical CONSTANTLY sounded like a warzone. One of the few things img glad we got rid off

Another one I kind of miss is that research chems were sometimes just medicines mixed together and they could do so inside your body.

One round was particularly devastating. A research chem ended up being a low overdose chem that was basically Bica + Inna. The marines died INSANELY hard as every medic fed hurt people bica and inna+ ; had it mix in their bodies; and do massive toxin damage from overdose. It got worse because people then feed them more bica trying to stablize them not knowing why they had none in their systems.

A few rounds in a row dev played with the bloodloss rate. Marines were showing up to the fob with 15% blood. If you got delimbed you hit 0. IB was a death sentence.
Doctors were killing patients left and right during surgery
I actually enjoyed that one…

also got one more thing that I think deserves a comeback if mutations become obsolete or removed. that being the MOBA system that xenos had that could let them modify their character slightly by sacrificing other stats twice, such as runner sacrificing health/plasma for even faster mobility or defenders sacrificing damage/plasma for even more armor. xenos also had an “in progress” perk tree that queen can buy for points by killing specific marines.
(sadly it was never used or finished but is still technically in the game?)
and queen also being able to sacrifice everyone’s stats for a global hive effect, that usually being plasma for more health. and queen mains always sacrificing their own plasma or damage for faster mobility and wreaking havoc for a solid year.
(an honorable mention being that praetorians used to have an ability that let them spit out sticky resin and wouldn’t have a time limit like gardener drone’s do)

It’s funny for me because I took a break from CM from around 2018 to 2023, so I missed the entire MOBA system’s implementation and subsequent removal.

So, from my perspective between me leaving and returning, it felt not a huge amount had changed in terms of the core gameplay mechanics.
