Well gasmasks are useless. They are purely a cosmetic and won’t even stop smoke from entering your lungs. At least that is my impression, may be wrong. The helm accessory gas mask doesn’t work for sure. So I suggest they work but without hindering the balance of gameplay. My idea is to make gasmasks work against any chemical smoke and only work partially against the boiler, say like it just slows the effects from taking place by half a second or something. I mean marines always were ready for chemical warfare ever since WW1. Would it not make sense to at least have functioning gas masks?

The only gas the gasmask you put on your face does NOT work against is Boiler gas. You can litterary try it yourself as a researcher where you put X chemical in a bucket, then make it into a gas, and see how everyone BUT you will be affected by the chemical you put in.
The reason it dosn’t work against boiler ACID gas is that its fucking acid, and works by melting your skin, flesh, and bones. And if you make it work against neuro gas, then it makes that gas useless, while also making taking a gasmask meta so you have an actual advantage against xenoes.
Hence I said only have a minimal effect as to not hinder the balance.

Minimal effect is still an effect. The only positive change i see is that i can identify metaplayers way better as they all will have gasmasks.
Problem with having the gasmask actually having a function in the game is that it costs literally nothing to take it.
You can attach 3 separate things to your helmet or you can wear it on your face slot. There’s no other mechanic-based non-aesthetic alternative so every single marine would be walking around with a gasmask.
I mean getting gassed with neurotoxin and just drop half a sec later is not that big is it?
The only way i can see Gas masks working against neuro is if we added filter’s like in metro 2033 where you got to change the filter every now and then to avoid dying .

A lot of drugs and poisons can affect you straight through the skin, so even neuro gas makes sense working without breathing it

So wearing a gas mask without full bio suit will work against chemicals???
Wearing a biosuit in game makes you immune to acid damage. you could litterary *stare at the acider exploding and it would do nothing.
I’ve seen a lot of synths getting one or spawning with one and shrugging off spitters like its nothing.
My point still stand,no? I’m arguing that how comes a single gas mask work if marines leaving bare skin against chem?
Edit: since xeno have acidic blood, it’s safe to assume most of their gas are acid-based

Well, its a yes and no question. If the chemical has an atribute less then 7 or so, then it HAS to be inhaled to be affecting you, but otherwise it WILL through your skin. It also depends on the property of course.
So yes you would block ALL inhalable chems, but none of the ones going through your skin.
Let’s take the boiler gas as example since people gonna meta against it with gas mask. In game, only the neuro gas has neurological effects so it’s safe to assume it has to be infected through inhalation, fine gas mask may works against it.
The normal gas burns marines so it should be a cloud of acidic gas, which I don’t see how in hell a gas mask gonna counter it without bio suit.

Imo the one we have now is pretty good. Better than the normal gasmask. Maybe the unique sprite should go to that one.
