Hijack Optional

This is an obviously hot topic, due to the amount of posts in the forums about hows/whens/shoulds hijack.

This is a post about if it happens. Not what happens during it or how it is done. Just if it happens at all.
I’ve read a bunch of the other topics and the other one that touches on this subject is @Steelpoint 's Remove Hijack. Or Make It Optional

How about this chart:

X means No
O means Yes

        Xenos / Marines
Hijack X O = No Hijack Xeno Minor, because xenos gave up chase.
Hijack O X = No Hijack Xeno Major, because marines gave up the fight.
Hijack X X = No Hijack Draw, both sides decided to cut their losses, it is not worth it.
Hijack O O = Hijack happens, Victory is decided as it is now.

If Hijack is denied it starts a timer of 3-5minutes to round end for Jelly/Medals, memorial and RP in general.

When the Queen takes control of the dropship and decides the place to crash in, it triggers an ARES response of the dropship taking off. Then inside the CIC bubble console would be a greyed out button “Reach Higher Orbit and Disengage” wich would be now back in color. The button can be pressed for 1 minute or the time it would take for the dropship to arrive. Correct AA settings could possibly increase this time.

It defaults to Hijack happening if no one disengages from the planet's orbit.

This way the xenos and marines can agree or disagree to a hijack and their decision would influence on the results of Minor or Major.

Why do I think this is good for the game:

  • Sometimes xenos do no want to continue the fight. Are forced(along the rest of the ghosts, skill issue) to hijack with the probable lower numbers they have and are stomped. Xeno Minor.

  • Sometimes marines don’t want to fight. Are forced(along the rest of the ghosts, skill issue) into a second FOB situation, only now it’s in the Lifeboats/SE Pumps area. This varies a bit.

  • Sometimes neither wants to fight. No one is forced(along the rest of the ghosts, skill issue) to 20-30 minutes of slog. Some RP time is given and we can all begin a new round soon.

  • Now, if both sides want to keep killing each other, then, and only then, the round continues. An early evac to cut losses might have occurred. Marines are still fresh or have greenos to help. Xenos have high numbers. FUN can still happen for both sides! Except for the ghosts. Who are forced(again, skill issue) to watch, as it is now.

With this choice, both sides can enjoy mutually when hijack happens.
This is the point of this whole wall of text. If it is enjoyable. This is the Love/Hate relationship that we have with Hijack. Sometimes we are just not in the mood for a continuous stomp.

PS: On the subject that “Marines can early evac with their whole army” and cut the win for the xenos short, I say this: Marines wants to win, anyone who decides to withdraw with only <10% marine loss is just griefing and should get a job ban. If they evac early like pussies, they deserve to lose to a Xeno Major.

Hosts says “big no-no for skipping hijack”.

The only way to do it now is for queen to hack DS console and order everyone on the landing pad before it lands.

It has been stated that there is no interest in removing hijack gameplay in any capacity. There is a general outline of where the maintainer team want to take hijack in this document: FTL Hijack Objectives · Issue #45 · cmss13-devs/cm-roadmap · GitHub

Don’t wanna type out my entire explanation of my point for the 4th time. I will always think the attacker has the right to chose if the defender is attacked, and not for the defender to chose if the attacker attacks.

Oh, thanks for the link. Nice to see that it is getting attention, instead of just “hosts say no”. (Since compared to some of the old timers here, Im too new to know of past decisions)

I agree to the xenos wanting to finish off the marines. Sounds like fun.
I disagree when the xenos DOESN’T want to finish off no one. For whatever reason the queen has.

I have done some extensive testing and the results are quite interesting. Turns out there has been a glitch for a while that allows you to skip hijack. (Lets hope devs don’t find out about it).

So how to replicate that glitch and skip hijack?

It is a little complicated but i will list steps i took during my testing:

  1. You spawn as marine
  2. Kill all xenos on the planet

Hopefuly after posting this quick instruction we will see less hijacks.

People need to read. This chaos does not end.

We could have had a small chance to skip hijack, but that was deemed too much. I don’t think there will be any chance or hope guys.

My main issue with these is that these are long-term goals which will likely be many, many months from implementation. Maintainers recognise that there are issues with the current system driving player engagement down (which is obviously evident by how a significant portion of the playerbase thinks there should be options for skipping hijack), which is good- It’s great that there are plans for hijack that will flesh it out more.

Most issues likely have some sort of long term project in the works, e.g. New Varadero Rework 4.0.

That’s awesome to see obviously, but the thing is- Being open source with unpaid contributors, unless you have some truly passionate people like morrow shitting out code like my intestines after a trip to Guzman Y Gomez, these solutions will take really, really long.

I dislike how there’s no temporary Band-Aid solution in the meantime.
If there is a known issue, it is my belief that there should be a stop-gap fix that addresses the issue even if not fully-ideal, and then replace it once the long-term solution is completed.

If there’s a pothole in my driveway, I’d rather not sit and wait for the city council to spend 6 months to fix it, I’m going to try and throw some questionably sourced gravel in to cover it up in the meantime.

We could at least:

with some good cluster bombs. At least the AA would do something.

The main problem is that bandaid solutions usually end up as a permanent solution(lifeboats sat unfinished for what, two years?)

Also people should just stop crying and play the game. Embracing the suck needs to be brought back.

Band-Aid solutions ending up as “permanent”?
What does this actually mean?
It means the actual, permanent solution wasn’t actually getting finished.

Let’s say we don’t have a band-aid solution. Would the permanent solution suddenly get finished faster?
The answer is a strict and resounding “no”.
If it wasn’t getting done when the band-aid solution was in place, it wasn’t getting done, period.

Your argument just doesn’t hold up, in my opinion.
If anything, it just reinforces my point. These permanent solutions are going to take a very, very long time irregardless of whether a band-aid solution is used or not. So WHY shouldn’t a band-aid solution be used? A band-aid compromise is better than no fix at all.

dont worry guys the king that has a 50% wr will surely solve hijack(it leads to even earlier evac and dies to stimmed marines)
