I would appreciate if a vet CL player would share some tips of what can you do and shouldn’t even try doing. Like for example is bribing QM to hack ARES console to buy plants for your office acceptable or you will get bwoinked for that ?
cracks knuckles
CL tips, you say
As one such veteran CL player, Thats totally acceptable as long (OOCly) but if you get caught then your going to have to face the music, Some things are bribing officesr (Never MPS as they are not going to accept and its a bad idea) additionally try to make up your own objectives, Most command staff will be too busy once the OP starts so going around borrowing all the ships SOUTO vendors or redecorating your office, One thing I’ve discovered is that your colony key that you can buy does reach the planet IF the comms relay is up, (Though depending on map YOU might not hear what they’re saying but they will hear you) and coordinating and acting as a critical link between the survivors and the marines (IF they even listen to you) is helpful and can be pretty rewarding if they live.
(Also EVERY CL eventually does secret xenos, Greenos are dealt with ICLY (The marines will kill you if they find out) but regular hive is more a OOC issue (As in admins will send angry people at you) and the moment you grow a hive some idiot with a MD will ping on the xenos in your cell
Become friends with management. Wait for them to be online then ask them so you know you’ll get a response to a fax.
You get alot of leeway as CL, so come up with some really crazy shit. I’ve taken visiting CO’s hostage before because they found out how lax i am with confidential information ICly, hell that CO i poisoned with cyanide too. Another good one is purchasing whatever your heart desires through faxes, and facing the music when it comes to pick up the bill. It’s great fun to get research on board, though it kinda depends on the temperament of the characters you’re dealing with. And sometimes its enough to just make friends with people onboard, theres always fresh faces to meet.
Honestly, just dive into the role, get paperwork round your head, and have fun. Unless you do something really stupid you aint gonna get in any sorta trouble OOCly. Half the fun of CL is the IC consequences.
It all depends on what kind of person your character is.
I play a very straight-laced, honest man who does everything he can to help out the average person. I have made several forms that are specifically for documenting deceased Weyland-Yutani personnel to make sure their families get their benefit packages.
You have to remember that you are there to protect Weyland-Yutani interests.
If you want to cause shenanigans, you need to do so in a way that benefits Weyland-Yutani. All that intel that the IOs have brought up? Well, once its scanned in, maybe you recover anything that has the Wey-Yu logo on it so word doesn’t get out. Maybe you bribe researchers to give you chems that could benefit the company. Maybe you trick someone in leadership to sign an Intent To Preserve, so the USCMC is on the hook for damaging the colony.
Alright I let the others have their fun, here’s the consecutive list of rules that me, Steve Mann and Titus Hill have for new CLs
- Do NOT the animal cubes. Death by cube is the highest mortality rate for new CLs, even more than hijack death
- Don’t fuck with the CIC, the CO can ground you and keep you in your office like a toddler. If you’re gonna fuck with someone, don’t make it them
- Don’t go griefing the ship without someone actually telling you to as a CL antag objective
If you want tips for how to soft grief without risk of a bwoink?
Steal some of the stuff intel sends up. NOT all. Just stuff that makes sense IC’ly to take. The colony blackbox. Colony Nuclear key. PMC gear if it’s there. Stuff that makes sense. Justifiably shit IC’ly. If you do more than that you risk a visit. Like when I visitted a CL for stealing about 200 intel items, 17 vials, and 7 xeno eggs and singlehandedly fucked the entire op. It became real grief, not soft grief. You can also maybe help the chem ERT scam research out of extra shit but that runs the risk of research hating your guts when they’re the closest things you have to allies on the ship.
one of my favorite gimmicks as CL is doing something like paying some exorbitant amount someone can’t deny (like 10k in cash) to buy out the rights to the entire kitchen
it doesn’t particularly disrupt the round but allows ALOT of room for RP shenanigans
if you want I can paste my contract template here
if you find a red xeno egg on the floor make sure to send it to WY, guaranteed to get some cool goodies (deal with MP’s at your own risk)
Very true. A lot of times as CL, research was outright hostile.
As someone who played Brett Tedrow as CL exclusively back in the old era of CM (Feweh / Apop era), and looking at CL as a role now, I find that the role really has not changed at all to what it really is at the core:
The Clown role.
The CL is literally just an IC excuse for adminbus; sometimes they give you cool objectives and toys but let you know that any consequences from their abuse is on them (such as if the Marines decide to murder the CL for them, its completely IC and no admin will care).
Othertimes, the admins are cold and apathetic to the CLs, even when they write the best faxes, reports, and roleplay like a God.
CL is always a coin toss and even with all the new features added to them (like Goons), they are still at their core the Mime and Clown job mixed together as a vehicle for funmin’s to explore more options shipside and have an excuse for their button presses. After all, sending in a PMC team to investigate the ship is more plausible when questioned if you state its because the CL is being inadequately treated by the USCM crew than if you just sent it in for no reason at all.
TL;DR play CL like the Clown of SS13; crack jokes, get involved with people, and sometimes get adminbussed, both for good or for bad and accept that half the rounds you play CL will be boring as fuck and/or a waste of time, and the others will be your fondest memories for when WY sent a Deathsquad just to extract you from the clutches of a rampaging CIC team that hates you just because you have the documents proving that CIC signed away all the rights to their ship to you.
Well said sir.
My first round as CL and I was hungry so I went into the little side area with the booze and ate the pretty little red boxes. My horror when I realized what they were. I was incredibly lucky that I managed to lurch out of my office and some caring marines took me to medbay.
So yeah, don’t eat the monkey cubes accidentally like I did!
Suicide bomb brig
another tip, interact with people. One day there was this marine and every shift start they would sell me a weapon, be it a deagle, type 71 pulse rifle or whatever. money is a great roleplay tool to make the round more fun.
secret CL tip: you know how the briefcase vendor cash glitches the ATM and only gives you 100? this can be circumvented entirely by combining two stacks of unmarked bills together.
Its not actually a glitch, im pretty sure the money the CL can spawn is fake; there is an actual fake money item that Seraphin found one day and told me and a few others in LOOC during a PMC mission I completed as part of an event.
the ATM glitching isn’t a bug at all. combining the money so it doesn’t do that is though.
To quote my guide
Do not the cubes.
And what did you do?
You ‘d the cubes
Yeah no all money the CL prints is counterfeit you need to bundle it for it to deposit right to become real cash. I love money laundering I love money laundering I love money laundering I love money laundering
Seriously though that is kinda dumb, makes no sense that a rich guy IC’ly is just printing fake cash.
