Idea: CO/XO Perks

Selectable perks in the loadout vendor, or character editor for XOs (or COs) that modify the tech tree or even Marines in a specific capacity.

Examples:

  • Infantry Leader - Foxtrot opens 10 slots instead of 5.
  • Tanker - Tank + Tank Crew is purchasable in the Tech Tree instead of Foxtrot Squad or Specialist.
  • Artillery Officer - OB purchases bring two shells, the firing cooldown is halved, the range on shells is halved.
  • Doctrinal Thinker (Assault) - Halve the price on AP ammo of all types, halve the per crate price increase
  • Doctrinal Thinker (Defense) - Metal crates contain 50% more metal.
  • Rapid Deployment Enthusiast - Begin with Tech Tree 3 (Foxtrot pre-requisite) unlocked at OP Start.
  • Combined Arms Enthusiast - Purchasing “Dropship Budget” as well as any Orbital Projectile halves the price and removes cost increase from “Wake Up Additional Troops”
  • Flight Chief - Increases dropship budget regeneration.

Just some thoughts, inspired by a conversation, and reminiscent of Company of Heroes.

I do not like this. Too gamey.

The Falling Falcons and the USS Almayer is supposed to be underbudgeted and restricted on supplies, and I agree with Duke, this does feel very gamey.

Infantry Leader: Maybe when pop is more healthy, this would be a decent idea independently if it also provides a bonus of larva for xenos (or slot spawns for CLF/UPP during HvH).
Tanker: I disagree on any idea that opens up the tank being unlockable via non-high pop. It would mess with balance too much.
Art. Officer: OBs are game changers, and I disagree making it easier for making it much easier to obtain or use them in such a manner. Also underbudget lore.
Doc. Thinker Asslt.: Underbudget lore.
Doc. Thinker Def.: This would harm the current direction the maintainers are trying to take CM13, so I don’t know if this point aligns with their current train of thought. Underbudget lore.
RDE, CAE, Flight Chief: Underbudget lore. Keep it tied to intel in my opinion. Weyland-Yutani HC pays the USCMC’s Falling Falcons for the recovery of intel/research documents lore-wise.

i actually feel like this could work, though the perks would need to be minor buffs (slight loadout point increase/price reduction?) and maybe come with some rp flavor somehow
the perks could be tied to career paths to buff the respective branch (though this would mean no xo buffs)

we’re playing a game we need game mechanics

company of heroes 2 in cm

the co chose rifle company instead of airborne company we must mutiny him

90% of these are bad though everyone would just pick infantry leader or artillery officer because any other isn’t going to be good or useful compared to that and i don’t think you could make any meaningful buff that isn’t also overpowered

Just feels like power creep if it’s this strong

Having 10 foxtrot instead of 5 is huge, foxtrot spam already wins rounds

I always imagined a possible implementation of drawing cards that have status effects. Such that an xo/co has a set of three cards to choose one and you get one set of cards at round start, 1 hour in and finally 2 hours into the round.

The beginning cards can be as simple as giving training to marines to use injectors instantly, or to give a passive gain boost in req funds. Late game cards I imagine can be as great as change it to hardcore mode where if you die you perma, but all marines end up gaining permanent order effect on move, hold, and aim as a last-ditch effort. Or sort of like scrapping the barrel and awaking 10-20 extra auxillary personel from cryo who have no firing skills/cannon fodder.

this would be completely overkill for a single round but could work for a longer term campaign like the one steelpoint suggested
speaking of, what happened to it? that was peak

The battlefront campaign? Yeah that was sick as hell. We need that as an actual continous event thing.

I agree with you on this one. Good idea and cheers bro!

@Aurallianz That is a great point I did not consider. Good on you.

My question is how do you handle an xo or co late joining or cryoing?
This may work but that is a huge hole

I like the concept of a CO/XO having more flavor, I’d probably say restrict it to XO given that COs already get their flair by proxy of the whitelist and limiting it to XO ensures you don’t get situations where you’re stacking them or where they’re totally inaccessible. Gives XO a little bit more identity too.

However, it definitely needs to be less gamey. Like, not only are those examples very strong, it’s a matter of where you’d definitely want one over the others. They certainly aren’t letting us get the tank back or bulk OB purchases. I’m not sure if I’d personally go further than just a choice of outfit for the XO, maybe a different gun or an extra skill point somewhere. Maybe, maybe you could have it that the different options gives Req some surplus of something at the start, like some free artillery shells or grenades. Problem is that’s a whole balancing act in itself. Doable, but even a minor difference in performance does risk every XO picking one option as the definitive superior choice.

ehhh the CO backgrounds did not make it in? I tought someone was already making that. they were flavor only

They did make it in, mostly as an outfit selector I think.

Underbudget lore is an excuse by Xenodevs to not make cool Marine equipment and to nerf Xenos, “underbuget penal batallion” might be the worst part of CM lore. Could make a whole different ideaguys thread about why it’s awful.

Worth also mentioning these were examples to show the scale & direction the perks would be modelled in.

First come first serve is the simplest & only way of managing it.

Again, they were examples but…

Intention is for these to be powerful, and hopefully with corresponding drawbacks. Concern about there being a “meta pick” doesn’t matter because meta picks already exist throughout the game, and throughout the CIC gameplay itself.
