Yes, it would likely be the most un-joined role we would have, but it would prevent hours upon hours of OT effort from being wasted.
Okay, why? Elaborate, please.
Why don’t we make the sniper spotter a role too? Or try to lock mk1/HPR behind a role? Or make a JTAC spotter a different role. It’s just a playstyle. The only difference is that a few of them give you a custom icon.
Personally, I believe that is unnecessary. Rifleman is a versatile role on which you can choose your own loadout, and locking them out of mortar would be kinda uncool. Like, really.
We actually have a mortar operator more often than OT. Also, the OT is not locked into just making mortar shells. Stating that they would faste effort on it is absurd when OT makes mines/SADAR rockets/MEGA GRENADES anyway most of the time.
Well, I’m not 100% sure on how to make Mortar better- like, the role essentially is sit at the FOB and let other people at the action call in shots for you.
The only thing this would really mitigate/fix is that an OT could look up the manifest, and know if someone is actively on mortar or not, before spending a lot of time building OT mortar shells. They can do this for grenade spec or SADAR.
It can be difficult to find out if someone is operating mortar. There’s the JTAC channel, but JTAC keys are finite- so mortar operator or OT might not get a JTAC key.
Don’t we literally already have mortar operator as a role???
(either merged or close to being merged)
It’s a pamphlet in the mortar kit, what you’re asking for already exists
If you mean it should be a role you join from the lobby instead of an opt-in like spotter or loader, then it wouldn’t even solve anything because the lack of mortar usage is because mortar is a hassle to use so only a fraction of players actually bother with it. You won’t solve this problem by turning it into actual rolebloat- Anyone who wants to play mortar can already do so, they won’t want to play more just because they can choose to play it from the lobby instead of just taking the pamphlet.
If it makes you feel better i came in later and used those shells to gib a defender and rav in one so. Nice
First. just make JTAC key a part of the mortar kit/Add JTAC channel into OT’s headset.
Second. Radio Telephone Backpack exists, and alamo, and the ground command tent with a phone in it. The Ordnance Technician’s workshop literally has a phone in it. If OT does not pick up, just call CIC/REQ or something and ask them to relay your request to the OT.
Actually a good idea.
It seems like you have a rudimentary understanding of the mortar operator. You are not obliged to simply sit and wait for coords like CAS. You can MAKE coords, unlike CAS (and more!). This post may be a little outdated, but explains it pretty well still.
another bloat role? skip
> Go to phone
> Ring QM
> “Hi, is mortar sent?”
if (no): Congratulations, hours upon ‘hours’ of OT effort saved, end here.
if (yes):
> Ring Bravo SL
> “Hi is mortar in use?”
if (no): Congratulations -//-
if (yes): Oh no, now hours upon hours of OT effort will be wasted anyway as Private Frontline Wiper will shoot your 3 OT shells you took 45 minutes to make into:
- An indestructible wall.
- Admin walls with nobody around
- 6 Alpha marines fighting one warrior (the warrior escaped before the shell landed)
people dont use mortar much because currently its just bad
it used to be used almost every round because it was good
I mean sure you use mortar to collapse defenses but mortars also are anti personnel weapons. They are meant to do damage to people. Maybe buffing the shrapnel shell to do more damage around the center of impact could help it.
we buffed shrapnel once and it broke the game for 2 weeks with OT claymores capable of one shotting the queen when filled with shrap
Correction: it was bugged and flame shells instakilled everything in their path, especially when tgchat keeps eating mortar messages because it’s dogshit.
I played both mortar and xeno extensively and that shit was stupid. Go kill xenos like a man or embrace the support nature of your role.
blud, what does it have to do with max/minimum range?
The mortar also needed balancing range-wise to reduce it’s effectiveness. At the time you had ASRS shit out mortar shells by the dozen, for free.
Nah, no need for such an empty bloat role.
While it does suk for OT to spend their 20 mins before ghosting making shells that never get used. We now have special pamphlets that give mortar operators uniqe roles, wich you can see on the crew manifest as OT.
So if you dont wanna waste your time as OT. Check the manifest for mortar Operators, before making mortar shells. Only reason not to is cause you cant be botherd.
