Performance Issues

alright so I was never a high fps player but recently the game is so clunky that you struggle to navigate. It runs like how I used to run garry’s mod on heavy modded servers. Any way to improve the performance?

This is how it is for me too : (

I’m not sure what got merged but the difference is astounding between last week having no issues, and this week (the later half) having mega fps issues.

It might be something that got merged because it used to run normal for me just a week ago. I used to have fps like this during multiz tests did that got merged? Just a guess tho

Have you upgraded to Byond 516 or are you still on 515?

yeah Im on the 516.1656 build which is the latest one even tried to downgrade to 515 and it was the same

Same. Barely matters if I’m on Beta or Stable, feels super choppy in spite of a good ping, and great machine specs overall.

I stopped playing on main a couple of weeks ago since i got addicted to PvE, but coming back to main I had multiple FPS problems even updated my byond to the new version didnt really seen to help at all and changing my FPS preferences did nothing.

Whatever PR got merged is making CM unbearable to play as a corpseman or anything really.

Precisely. It’s horrendous. Slightly more bearable on lowpop, but, highpop? Bleak. I’ve had a handful of incidents with ENORMOUS input delay because of the lag. I press A once, and end up walking all the way into the Queen Mother’s home planet.

I’ve no idea what it is that was merged that could possibly be causing all of this, but it’s hopefully to be addressed soon, or I’ll have to make the switch to PvE altogether.

This might be my own bias, but I could swear it’s the faster cellauto. It would make sense why it’s at strange intervals, since it would only happen when an explosion calculation-gone-wrong happens.

Somebody please prove me wrong if I am

thought this was about monster hunter wilds

Yeah I’ve noticed FPS getting worse lately too. I’d suspect it was multi Z, but surely the framework doesn’t affect performance that much by itself???

Regardless, highpop now feels really bad.

516.1654(the currently recommended ver), FPS set to 40, game runs terribly for me as well as of late, been hard to tell how much is my internet network having issues as it is prone to do and how much is the game itself, but I’ve barely been able to play for the past week or two.

I have fps set to 100, still on 5.15, my internet is currently spotty so unable to give good info if performance has been worse.

I would also recommend clearing the cache in your byond launcher. Supposedly it will help.

515 is terrible performance wise, even back when faster cell auto and multiz wasn’t a thing. i’m on a slightly outdated beta version, 516.1650, and it works just fine

Yeah but thing is, I’ve never had a problem with 515 even while playing on PvE, only when returning to main did I notice multiple FPS problems. Not sure what even happened, even when playing the multi-z maps during test rounds were fine. And yeah clearing cache did nothin…

Same. PVE is runnin fine for me too. For now I guess I’ll have to stick to non-combat roles and hope it fixes itself

Alrighty. I’m no developer and I dont know how to code stuff… but I did some testing by launching the older versions of CM and came into conclusion that something that was added after this
Smartscope now uses alt IFF. (#8273) · cmss13-devs/cmss13@f065daf · GitHub
is causing my game to run on 3 fps.
After checking the things that got added on that time frame the only thing that looked suspicious was the Multiz improvements and fixes (#8571) · cmss13-devs/cmss13@68404c9 · GitHub
I did launch on the version that alt IFF got added and it ran perfectly fine but like I said I dont know how most of this stuff works so sorry if this is misinforming. I’m just trying to make my game run like it used to. Any ideas on what is causing this? Im not selfish enough to say revert the PR (help) so just just trying to learn what is causing it since im curious

Update! after discussing it with a contributor friend of mine it is indeed the multi-z stuff causing old GPU’s to struggle while multi-z is off testing. Something about the turfs? They said.

  • The ghost bar for example has a up and down arrow near it which does not work while multi-z maps are off testing
    image

  • No idea if its fully merged or not or if its now a vital part of the game but according to what I see the maps we play are not multi-z

  • I do know some people who play with older GPU’s who struggle with this but they are a minority, so I don’t really have a solution for this other than reverting something.

  • Tried overclocking the GPU which gave me something between 10-12 FPS total and overheated it (that was a bad idea)

Conclusion: Nothing we can do to improve it really since its a computers hardware problem and most of the people can infact play with no problems. I’ll test out other OS’s to see if there are any improvements since windows is a bit bloated with unused stuff. If you are playing on linux etc. do post here if you saw any improvements in the performance.

Me and 2 friends with similarly shitty GPUs have the same issues. it used to be just specific maps causing fps problems (Soro, especially during weather was the biggest example, VFX like particles and colored lighting also ate vram). It’s not uncommon at all for people with old GPUs to play ss13 and I genuinely think it’s not an insignificant portion of the active playerbase.

Idk what it is either, I think it’s just multi-z takes up a lot more vram ever since Multiz improvements and fixes by Git-Nivrak · Pull Request #8571 · cmss13-devs/cmss13 · GitHub was merged and it made the game unplayably laggy

I’m not a computer expert nor know any code, but this is my best guess with the timeframe of when the FPS lag started (I remember it being around the time that the oil rig map first got tested when the fps issues began)

Well I did contact Nanu about it and they did notify Nivrak who made the PR. After checking it out they did say the code is fine and it is an hardware issue so nothin’ we can do other than to upgrade. It’s been a good journey lads…
