This poll is needed for a guide I'm makeing.

  • I enjoy wacky character gimmiks and I use them them myself.
  • I enjoy wacky chararcter gimmicks and I don’t use them myself.
  • I do not enjoy wacky chararcter gimmicks and I don’t use them myself.

The guide is about RP as a whole but this poll is for gimmicks. This is to gather a little extra data. So please tell me your vote and the reason behind your vote. For the sake of fairness I should say that I do enjoy a wacky gimmik. Now I have read the rules and doing a wacky gimmick is not LRP. Even if they are LRP I still enjoy watching them waiting for the admins to ban them.

What do you define as “wacky” that is my question.

I think this poll is missing quite a lot of nuance- Generalising these things won’t get the whole picture. A lot of people enjoyed weird shit like Bill Carson’s and Bob Cross’s absolutely awful CIC performances, or other wacky COs with horrific strategies, but if you were to force them to sit through MULTIPLE rounds in a row with those CIC characters, they’d start suiciding into ASRS to play Civ 7 instead.

However, wacky gimmicks that don’t really impact the round i.e. Gerdy’s maintenance shtick, or some very eccentric marines tend to be fun to play with 24/7, though people who play them tend to often fall foul of LRP standards and accrue a truly amazing list of notes.

People don’t either like gimmicky characters or they don’t- As with most things, it’s a spectrum where you gotta take in account “How often do I have to interact with this guy?”, “Does this guy have any in-game impact on me, e.g. CIC?” and “Is this gimmick fun-wacky, or cringe-wacky?”

Sorry for not being more clear. In this case wacky means whatever you think it means. So first tell me and then tell me your reasoning. The poll was more jsut their to spark conversations so I can collect data on the super culture of the game. I could expline why but it would take a long time and super pretentious sounding.

Their are no wrong answers. Any reaction is usefull.

A distinct character is distinct though, regardless of constituent factors. If someone says “I hate all wacky characters…” then you have to ask them why they hate “wacky” characters, what their definition of “wacky” characters is, and to justify that generalization. And further, generalizing is kinda pointless anyway, because there will always be exceptions, and most people play in good faith.

More likely than not, it’s not the character that is bad, but their interpretation of the personality or some other constituent factor of that character. If it’s just because they’re eccentric or annoying, then no harm no foul. There is nothing wrong with being who u are (or in this case, being who ur character is) : D .

The alternative being 50 basic ass characters who don’t talk to anyone and all look the same and act the same is not a good solution IMO. It’s better to play the way you think is most fun, and figure out in-game social dynamics later.

i technically play a wacky character (Kenobi) but the wacky shit i do is just insane talk(“there are worms in your veins!” and shit like “this man is not dead, hes faking it!” as medic)

What im really tryina ask, are you asking about just normal wacky stuff that impacts no one really or wacky stuff that impacts people(as much as i hate to say it) like random squad on fob, paradrop, split drop, all squads on fob etc, because all of that is stuff that is just shitty(normally because most marines refuse to take the suicidal option but SLs are forced by OOC rules to obey CIC).

As i said before when asked in this case wacky means whatever you think ti means. Just tell me what it is. Since you did thanks.

I think it really just depends on the context. Wacky characters CAN be interesting, so long as they’re done well and fit the setting. I do run some Wacky characters myself, its just about having discretion and knowing when and when not to do a bit. Like if some dude is bleeding out in front of you, probably not the best time to be doing some quirky gimmick. The main issue I’ve seen with Wacky characters is just people not knowing when to turn it off and roleplay as a marine who would have had some standards instilled upon them.

Depends on how abnormal is “wacky”

I’m not really a fan of the eccentricities of my own character. Because if I RP I wanna RP as a specific character because of the traits and quirks, however I can’t try to subtextually explain why those exist because if I was to make a realistic origin to said wacky stuff then the resulting story would be long as fuck, and way too nuanced for me to write and for anyone to care.
The solution? Make a wacky as hell character with a wacky story so you can get to RP in a specific way and do your character in that way so it’s so blunt that nobody will have difficulties in understanding it.
Legitimately ask yourself: What’s the percentage of the playerbase that writes good and long character dossiers? What’s the percentage of the playerbase that reads those dossiers?

Why would I play as a boring, mundane character if I’m already a boring, mundane person IRL? Wacky stuff is what makes the game fun

If I ever write a dossier - it’s gonna be comedy gold. Or something in the “so serious that it’s funny” category

So I see a lot of you voted that you do wacky characters. Could one of you tell me what that character you play is. What are peoples in game reactions when you use them?

Could you elaborate on that statment.

I love a gimmick so long as it doesn’t repetitiously affect round outcomes. I love playing my main and got a lot of people who enjoy my main as well. Just a tired old guy (made him when the age limit was 160 instead of 90) with a bizarre accent and a 2180s Texas hardened felon space redneck attitude. Weird W-Y shit? Check. Prison time? Double check. Mandatory military service? Triple check. An excessive amount of ex-wives and kids, grandkids, etc.? Quadruple check. I never have to break character because generally Gramps isn’t flat or doing a gimmick that would cause him to not fight for his life or drag your ass outta a fire.

I play a shirtless rollerbed marine because it makes me faster to recover bodies, alot of people ingame (especially medics) seem to appreciate it, regulars in the community usually like what I do with a small minority hating it.
I don’t have any character quirks personality wise really though.

It’s kind of hard to make personality quirks tbh, because it’s a TDM game and we have no time to RP our char’s childhood trauma or something

I’ll never know if a marine in front of me has 69 pages of backstory or not, but when JoJo character starts running around and stealing my caps - yeah, I’ll remember that

Im just not that good at deep roleplay honestly, I can come up with reactions on the fly, I just cant really write a story for my character thats interesting or I can incorporate ingame without losing interest.
I respect people who can, for example lauffer, I think his quirk is funny and incorporates actual lore and history into his character at the same time.
Some people can do it naturally and its very memorable.

I am noticeing a lot of people using the term character quirk. I have a question what does that word mean to you. What comes to mind when you hear that word.

Also yes this is all for the guide and yes it will likely be terrible.

Missed opportunity to include vote option:

“I do not enjoy character quirks, but feel forced to use one anyway.”

Blink twice if you’re in a WL.

To me at least, a character quirk is the attribute(s) that makes the character unique and memorable. For some people its portraying an ideal through their characters speech, for others its just some quirky way their character acts or talks. Like, there are definitely characters out there that even if I couldn’t see their character or their name I could tell you exactly what character it is just based off the way they speak and act.
