Well, the fun is over, still don’t know why some people were so mad since you can literally turn it off and forget about it.
Honestly, the only serious problem with this was pitches being able to go too high, and some of the voices were too LRP honestly, like the one which was basically 80% radiostatic. Lag was also of concern, mostly on highpop.
I’d say this COULD work one day if someone optimizes it properly, removes some LRP stuff and lowers the possible pitch range.
Though, I wont lie, voices being different gave so much character to xenos. I did only one marine round, maybe that’s why I didn’t notice much soul in marine TTS, but xenos 100% had soul.
I think my favourite part were the names of some of these voices, woman (felinid) and Man (racist) being my two favourites
Edit:apprantly another option was “large grandma”
Evil admins turn tts off the second i am available to play, fearing the power I was about to acquire
The power of the sun… in the palm of my hand
i never liked TTS in ss13-- until it got testmerged here. it’s no different than any other server when it comes to implementation but holy shit it works so much better here than in TGMC or tg or whatever.
YET, we could not even have this thing testmerged for more than 24 hours. i’m betting that the fact some people kept dogpiling and throwing every insult imaginable on the PR dev, because they had “concerns about LRP” or whatever, had a part in it. like, okay?.. let the admins handle the LRP goobers. there was even a 3 hour ban rule for cases like this, implemented just for the TM. but i guess it’s easier to screenshot rulebreakers instead of ahelping them.
we can’t have nice things, apparantly
During the Testmerge (in the Lrp ban rounds) I found myself talking and interacting much more than usual with my fellow marines.
I believe TTS has alot of potential for player roleplay interaction and has proven itself in the testmerges, outside of players that were chasing the funny®, especially during briefing.
Overall I found this experiment gave a much more engaging experience when talking with fellow marines. And I would love to see more of it.
if we kept tts in for like a month…
it was surprisingly diverse with the voices that could be made.
The shitposting words would probably die down over time, but ofc when it first comes out, people want to abuse it because it’s fun.
As much as I was against it, and it probably shouldn’t be added, it’s pretty good.
We can’t ever have anything nice!
Nah. Only should have some voice lines for small noises you can make. Like, if you type in “hmmm” you make a little sound.
But belive any form of tts that goes beyond that dont sound good chief.
Thank god it was closed. I appreciate the effort of the test. I have a fundamental disagreement with its inclusion in CM but it did not hurt to experiment.
I dunno and I have not been in the Req line to order items, but I know that the TTS AI struggles to say IB, IA and even other words that are CM exclusive, also without TTS you can imagine the tone/emotion of what a marine said.
With TTS this doesn’t work (Ignoring the “Yeah, Yeah, Come get some…” Voice) every sentence has the same emotion that’s auto filled for you.
Arguments for “just turn it off in your preferences”, well
A: have it be a fleshed out feature before releasing
B: Disabling a feature that people expect others to have on/gives advantage to have on, is not a good idea. Eg. Wide-screen
Some feedback, I think the amount of voice options/pitches should have been reduced to a couple of options to reduce the troll attempts at making TTS as annoying as possible.
The TTS at the start should have been initially limited to command roles such as CO/XO/SO/SL’s and then gradually given to the other marine roles.
I wouldn’t be opposed to it coming back for special events like weekends of importance like Christmas → new years, or something.
Also, @PurpleCIoud the voice is very sensitive to grammar. You can change how the voice expresses itself with punctuation. Which isn’t something people have time to type often & many people don’t speak English as a first language. Also the ia being “ee-eh” is immersion breaking. Unless you did something like IA I-A or I.A. which may guide the voice to pronouncing it correctly.
Even then it did have some troubles which would need code to guide it.
There is a cost implication to TTS.
We are currently testing TTS in a “Trial” mode with the help of our good friends at TG.
From a Financial standpoint, There is currently no sunk cost fallacy as the sunk cost hasn’t kicked in yet and considering the code is plug-and-play, it’s fairly modular and easy to deploy. The cost of TTS is currently a major downside.
The Og Dev of TTS, Goof/Blurtach is working on a new CM-specific model which might be tested later, which should eliminate a lot of the issues raised.
Additionally any further tests would see significant restrictions to the currently 200+ voices available. Unfortunately this needs to be filtered manually from a config perspective. We had our fun with Felind’s and Spongebob.
When the staff team have to go make a announcement about the PR and tell folks not to do X or Y will happen, and people still do it. That is not a good sign, the community just cant be trusted to miss use things like this. This is why we cant have nice things.
Weird example honestly. Wide screen gives you extra tiles of vision which hurts the balance, TTS just lets you hear what you already can see. It’s nice and this is why I want TTS on CM, but there is no actual necessity for it. You can disable it and you won’t lose anything.
And if you still think you will be less responsive without TTS, then this is an argument for TTS, not against it honestly. Because we want people to pay more attention to chat, this is not a balance consideration, but actually a roleplay one.
This is to be expected with any major new feature that a lot of people can use. I would subscribe to the idea of, “Do not judge a system based on how it’s used within the first day of being deployed but judge it a week later”.
From my observation, we had almost no real issues with TTS players for the first few rounds, it was only when we got to high-pop hours that some issues started to appear. But frankly, I feel the issues were overblown, we did get a surge of admin-helps for LRP behaviour, but those were quickly corrected and the amount of people doing LRP stuff that was being actioned was in the single digits.
In my opinion, I really enjoyed the TTS test merge. From a xenomorph perspective, I felt it gave far more gravitas and power to the Queen and Leaders, as it gave them even more capability to get attention and coordinate the team. For the marines, I felt it encourages people to communicate verbally more, even in combat situations.
Yes, the system will need refinement to smooth out the issues, but I think its a worthy investement of time.
Not the greatest argument against TTS itself, as it feels more like you are opposed to change in general, if we take out the words from context. Of course some people just cant help themselves but to abuse it and shitpost, and they deserve a punishment for it. With enough notes and\or bans, plus time passing, people would stop abusing it either because they lack the desire to do it anymore or cause they cant physically due to a ban.
You could honestly make the same argument against OT grenades, if they were added right now for example, that people missuse them and grief the frontline by exploding it and then saying it was an accident and they wanted to blow up the runner, or the OT put a faulty chemical combo in the mix and the OT grenade exploded right after being primed, decapping a helmetless marine in the process.
There always will be shitters trying to abuse something new for their personal fun, they always will be punished and with time people wont abuse it on everyday basis, maybe with only the rare bomber\John Madden spammer happening and then getting shot down by admins immediatly.
After playing a round with the TTS it ended up being somehow better (as in there’s a LOT of options and the work involved to make it a feature was impressive) but also worse at the same time. I couldn’t take anything seriously, all the voices were goofy and most stolen from other media (we had Balthasar Gelt, Repanse de lyonesse, Grombrindal, postal dude and plenty others) so it takes you out of any even remotely RP moment. After a week or a month the LRP might tone down but you’ll still have more LRP moments because of it even if you personally turn TTS off someone is still going to be saying something dumb because it’s on by default so they’ll presume everyone has it on.
That said I can see TTS as being helpful for some folks but it’s better off used as an opt in feature that’s not meant to replace your characters voice in an RP way but help folks who struggle by limiting it to being on the roles they feel it needs to be on. Say you can toggle it on for SLs or Medics so you don’t miss important information. It’s a when you code it problem but that’s the only way I can see it working without causing problems elsewhere.
If a new player joins the game and can give themselves a bugs bunny voice then the expectation for MRP is out the window before we started.
If TTS ever comes back I hope I’m proven wrong and it turns out to be a great addition but I just don’t have a lot of faith.
I agree about the voices of characters used for tts, nothing breaks immersion more then hearing some marine talking like fucking postal dude, its just silly
