TTS in CM13

TG and TGMC are the “top servers” we kept being told have this so we should implement TTS cause they have it

TG and also has clowns and TGMC little to no RP with people running off to do whatever they want. It’s their culture it’s not CMs.

TTS is lrp regardless of the people saying “let it simmer down”. There are multiple clips of briefing being ruined due to everyone speaking at once. People saying goofy shit just cause it sounds funny. Strange tones cause TTS can’t detect emotions

This is an unnecessary change that in a short time changed how marines talked and act for the worse. It should start off then people that want it or need it can enable it. Not forced down our throats.

This isn’t a minor change, this will change the culture of CM.

People say something dumb even without TTS. People even grief each other, use cheats, etc. It just should be against the rules and we’ll be okay.

TG has several servers, some of them are in fact MRP (and probably more MRP than CM is) and TTS doesn’t detract from it.

Oh so it’s a TTS thing, not like it happens every round without TTS as well? People clowning around during briefing every single round. Is this the culture you wanna save?

You can just fucking disable it. Let other people have a nice tool you don’t want to use.

If your worst-case scenario is “people are gonna say dumb shit IC”, then we’re already living in that scenario.

Whack stating your own opinion something is bad and using evidence of rounds and actions gets ignored and you just opt to insults.

Idk what to say to the argument TG is more close to MRP than us. Do you think I haven’t played TG? I have and you know as well as me that was a false statement.

The people that seem to be arguing for this only want it in cause other people don’t and have no real argument besides insult and red faring arguments. (Even the the people putting this in seem to want it just to not let the community “defy” them again or are upset it wasn’t liked)

Yes I want to preserve the cm culture and stay as true to the original source as we can, cause this is Colonial Marines. You are 100% correct about that I enjoy the culture of CM

The argument of something of this being liked as a “nice tool” goes both ways. The community is clearly split on this. Presenting a solution of it being started off so both sides are happy is more than you have done.

Lol the guy who was making TTS got banned for being toxic to people stating their opinions it was bad.

No, he’s still in the discord

Okay I’m down :+1:

Also not talking about watermelon. I’m talking about the dude who’s actually making it.

Tio said he didn’t like the new speech stuff and the dev responded by telling him to get a job. Tio posted screenshots of his bank account to shut him up. He was banned after cause apparently it’s against TOS to tell someone to get a job

Get yo bag up not your funny up

Naturally, the “MRP” crowd is against me roleplaying as JC Denton.
Shameful!

Solid response from TIO. Did the dev reply showing that they themselves possess proof of gainful employment?

Tio was banned?
What a shame (lip smack)… What a rotten way to be banned.

He meant the tts man who kept telling people to get a job got banned.

During the round I got capped pretty early. Because of this I didn’t have much time to experience TTS as a marine in combat.
That being said: I found TTS as a xenomorph to be really helpful. Hearing the Queen and leader’s (Emiix primarily) orders verbally kept me far more aware of the situation and on task. The local TTS that all the xenos could use to communicate I could take or leave. Same with marine side TTS. But I do think that the queen having TTS would really help coordination.

People join in, see funny feature added, try out saying weird shit to see how TTS works, probably get bwoinked in the process, recover from the bwoink and dont repeat the same mistake.

I have not played TGMC, but I assume it has next to zero actual RP moderation, unlike CM, where you are very likely to get beaten upside the head if you go around speaking about skibidi toilet rizz in Ohio.
You act like admins will specifically promote TTS shitposting and not just admin sleep briefing if it gets too cancerous. Briefing was always LRP, due to marines often talking over XOs or COs they dont like or which have a boring plan. I honestly don’t have people talking over me too much as XO, but I seen alot of different XOs get briefings way worse than what happened when TTS was around. Most tame is probably 9 marines beating the briefing bubble with bullets and causing a ruckus, then ganging up on an MP, while the XO is trying very hard not to just say “Okay, fuck you, here’s a dumber plan so you can go already”.

Yeah, if staff members say LRP wasn’t really that bad (probably better than expected, really), then the ACTUAL baseline LRP behaviour that “could” result from TTS is likely far lower, due to the before-mentioned novelty of new features wearing off, and people getting slaps on the wrist.

If LRP during the initial TM was O.K., then LRP after a TTS merge will probably just be baseline CM.

I think based off the test-merge results, the feared negative implications of TTS seem to have mostly not materialised (though lag and resources…).
Regardless, TTS is being improved on so I’m sure it’ll eventually get to a more workable state. Until then, I think the main barrier is not inherent LRP. Just kill off some of the goofier voices and we’ll be fine. I think the question of TTS at this point, is not a question of if, but when.

For real guys the fact mods had to note folks even with like what 3 announcements warning folks NOT TO FUCK AROUND, is just proof. Its a pain to moderate, and we are not worthy of TTS yet here in CM. We all need stop breaking and missing using anything and everything. You see LRP or any rule break just ahelp it, staff need to handle it when the tickets roll in. If you dont think they did a good job or such staff report it or go to their manager. I have not even touched what @Sandvich123 has said, he alone nailed that.
This is why we cant have nice things.

“We are not worthy” so basically they are gaslighting us into believing a TTS WL is nessesary

Testmerge is over and the PR is closed. Let us put this issue to rest and keep it in mind should TTS be PR’d again. We all have strong feelings about it and I can respect that.

what are you talking about, I made TTS

they’re just a contributor who works on the model, they don’t necessarily represent my views 1:1 and I often disagree with them a lot

I loved it, from the experiences i had it turned to be a total BLAST.

Being able to hear the other one talking with you in their character voice was just perfect.

However, unfortunately there was people taking it to the extreme.

TTS actually has little to no performance cost, though there is concern for clientside performance if your internet connection is really shoddy. If you are experiencing stutters with TTS enabled, try turning it off and seeing if everything goes back to normal. It’ll usually happen because byond’s asset transfer system sucks and any time it tries to send you a dynamically generated sound file, it can lag you up based on the size of that file and how sturdy your internet connection is.

When I tested locally, I found that having 300 ping or any sort of packet loss results in stuttering, so as long as you have neither, it should be buttery smooth. And this is generally what most people I found said, it’s just that a few might have a bad connection so they might need to switch TTS off.

As for the LRP stuff, this thing really just gets cleared up with time. It’s why we have admins, and the same can realistically happen with any feature if admins aren’t doing proper enforcement. With the case of TTS, it’s very blatant and very easy for admins to enforce, just like if a bunch of marines started shooting each other in briefing.

Admin enforce brings this sort of stuff inline and in with the expectation that you want and the only reason people were spamming voicelines was because it was a novel and new feature. This is mostly the same sort of thing that happens with anything that’s new. People eventually do tire themselves out of it and then find TTS to be a really useful tool that’s just helpful in general gameplay.

EDIT: just some extra stuff about the performance stuff too. In 516, the next major byond version, we’ll get access to some cool stuff which’ll basically allow us to completely remove the clientside performance cost so that TTS will basically have 0 performance cost.

tl;dr performance cost is mostly clientside, should be possible to disable so that you don’t experience it, and once novelty wears off and admins keep consistent enforcement, player behaviour will go back to normal and the fabric of roleplay will be maintained.
