It appears that some players have a problem with TTS being used for LRP shenanigans, and I don’t know why is that an issue… It’s a game, we come here to have fun, and if you want to be a sweaty roleplayer - go play on Baystation or smth
I found marines speaking in Team Fortress 2 voices, Half-life 2 voices and anime voices extremely funny. Finally, the neon-haired nuggets and other meme characters got the corresponding voice, that fits their appearance and adds to the absurdity and chaos of this game, making it much better (especially with some funny aspects of the system, such as converting the word “rav” into barking )
TLDR: bring TTS back, please! It was one of the best things we had, and you killed it!
Host and such have said we are a MRP sever (correct me if I am wrong). This isn’t TGMC, please go play it if you want “absurdity and chaos with neon hair nuggets and meme voices”.
and thus, this is my forum post on a current topic for the month. see you all next month
You know, i sadly missed the TTS TM. But seeing how it actually playd out, im gonna retract my previous statment.
If TTS had moderated selection of voices that dont sound like deepfried earrape mp4, it migth be a very nice addition.
I have Satellite internet (it’s my only option where I live) and I can’t even have lobby music on. TTS caused my client to disconnect so many times it wasn’t even funny. Beyond that though I am channeling the ghost of Harlan Ellison and questioning where these voices were scraped from for the AI.
They mentioned it could cause issues, I confirmed it does. Of course I am gonna turn it off. If they shouldn’t add it for a reason it’s not that (because I just turn off midi and TTS), but because it utilizes voices from a LLM that is certainly stealing voice lines and data as AI does.
Not to be a dick, man, but he can disable this feature as he already have done with admin midis and lobby music.
What is the point of bringing it up? Guy has an actual issue with lag that lobby music causes. Guy has an actual issue with lag that admin midis cause. Guy has an issue with any sound file sent to him. Yeah, so what? Disable it. Neither gives any adventage, or disadventage.
The ethical concern about AI and used data is a legitimate issue. Not that it causes lag on a medicore internet.
It is not like he has a medical condition that makes hearing TTS harmfull, or that he is at a disadventage, or something, which is the case with epileptic (bright flashes), or colorblind people, especially when it concers a game mechanic that impacts gameplay.
And stating that raised issue shouldn’t be of any concern, because it is toggleabe and also not directly related to main topic, but to sound files sent to player, doesn’t suddently make me one. Even if such statement was made in a lame “trying to be funny, but not funny” way.
Maybe I am autistic, or something, but I simply cannot understand how people can have so many problems with something you can turn off and it doesn’t impact gameplay in a meaningfull way.
When you point that out, you are a dick. But when somebody becomes yet another drone saying stuff like “It is bad and/or it causes issues and/or I don’t want it” even though it can be turned off, thus doesn’t cause any issues for them, they don’t have it, so it is no longer bad, and returns to the “good status” then yeah, me “being a dick” toggle turns “on”.
If I worded my response differenty, like I was speaking to a little child, would that be better?
“Oh honey, that feature would be a toggle, you can turn it off, just as you most likely did with admin midis, you silly little goober”
Once the performance issues are quashed, presuming development on this concept will continue, I feel its just a matter of balancing to make the concept work, such as.
Remove the meme-tier voices
Make voice overlays (such as a gas mask) more subtle (i know this was a separate voice but I liked the idea of a filter put over a voice if its being sent though a gas mask)
Add a way for the CO/XO to silence TTS during a briefing
Ensure the average TTS voice is not extremely loud or high-pitched
Limit how high a pitch you can set to a voice to cut down on disruptive voices
Make it more obvious that Queen and Leader hiveminds are from the hivemind, such as a slightly different filter effect
On that note, make it all Xeno voices are female sounding, except for the King
I don’t know if it was just the one round I was able to take part in (TTS was turned off right after), but even after turning my TTS off in settings, my performance did not improve, compared to playing right now it was noticeably laggier.
A sample size of 1 round with TTS isn’t great but not sure what was up with this, other people were also saying it was lagging even after turning it off, whether that was the server lag in that particular round that would’ve been there without TTS, I don’t know.
Non-standard (non-CO) hair color marines should be forced to use high pitch variants just to make them five times more annoying.
Well said man. I agree with your concept. It addresses many issues I have with TTS. Only problem is “Add a way for the CO/XO to silence TTS during a briefing” not that I do not think it is a decent idea but I do not see how mechanically it is possible. However, you code wizards do amazing things on a 20 year plus old platform.
This should be the standard should TTS be added to CM. Fantastic work.
On the above notes, at minimum I could see an attempt to translate the TTS system towards working for ARES and Queen Mother messages. A fully voiced ARES system would be a massive boon, not only would it help immersion, but it would make it viable to add even more custom ARES messages for current and future shipside features.
Imagine the research lockdown having a fully voiced ARES alert instead of the Lifeweb alarm?
