What Happened to fun Gimmick COs

Yeah this thread got a bit wild but in the end this was a good fucking thread, it’s nice to see the perspectives of COs and council members. Just having this discourse is great for the community.

From what I’ve seen, unless you’re very obviously playing a gimmick people will assume you’re just incompetent and put you in the F tier.
If you’re “just competent though”, people just forget your performance that round unless you’re ridiculously communicative.

But honestly, the competence counts for quite a lot- I guess if you look at the synth WL, it’s kind of in the same boat? I mean, there weren’t any Bill Carson synthetics, but one must admit that the RP aspect of synth is pretty inconsequential relative to your competency. Most people would agree that most synth players basically act the same. When marines see a synth, they typically don’t see someone to roleplay with (unless they’re sexualising/objectifying/dehumanising/fetishising the synth, which is incredibly based utterly unacceptable), they see a sign that goes “Hey! I know my shit, so you don’t have to rely on (Insert Stupid Marine Here) anymore!”, and that’s well… a pretty useful role to have!

I don’t believe gimmick COs are coming back anytime soon, but the impact they’ve had on making our notion of COs being “EPIC 4D CHESS TACTIC THAT WILL KILL ALL XENOS OR KILL ALL MARINES BEFORE 00:30 ,ABCD CHARGE solos half the hive” has been pretty huge. Even if those gimmick rounds were in the overwhelming minority, people don’t remember competence- They only remember funniness, or abysmal failure.
I don’t really notice much discernible “personality” between COs, similar to synths as they both require the majority of their attention to their roles, with RP sidelined.

I don’t know why exactly people apply for the CO WL, but I’d guess that it’s more “I like playing command, and CO lets me command harder while showing my ‘competence’”, and not “I love RP”, similar to synths.
Maybe we should just bite it and accept that the WL should be more of an avenue for masochists command enthusiasts to better contribute to the round and show how CIC should be run by competent people, and how great of an impact a well-oiled CIC can have on a round.

And well, not just CIC- I think groundside COs make a pretty great example for bald SLs to follow- typing a 300 word announcement next to a resin door and getting decapitated by a woyer immediately Heavy use of fire support, taking charge, never shutting up, taking the initiative, shit like that.

If I had to describe the CO WL, I’d probably say that. I mean, thinking back- Well, it’s kind of just the synth WL but with guns.

Sorry if the post has schizo flow, it’s more rambling than coherent thought.

It was a terrible crime you were removed.

I don’t think whitelists were ever genuinely needed.

Frankly they feel extremely insular and cliquey now, with the rules and standards for these jobs more and more being weaponized for political reasons to remove or control whitelisted players than because there’s any actual harm done to the playerbase or game.

Too many hoops to jump through - not just getting into the councils but also staying in them while being able to have fun.

And the gatekeeping doesn’t seem to be having a net positive effect; as this very thread describes. We’re losing cool CO’s for drama and political reasons, not actually griefing the server.

Spoken like a true whitename who never even so much as tried to grab a Whitelist.

It’s pretty much universally agreed upon, by all whitelists, that holding a whitelist and seeing it internally is WAY different than what people tend to see and focus on from the outside.

If you think there’s too many hoops to jump through - maybe that’s a you-thing. That’s my take :3

Have you considered the reason it looks so different internally is because of how elitist you are?

Literally proved his entire point by your statement.

GUFFAW YES HAROLD, Harold come look out the window again! The WHYTENAYMES are REVOLTING! GUFFAW-SNERT-GUFFAW MMMyes look at them Harold.”

There are folks that MADE the whitelist, and there are others, like yourself, where the whitelist MADE them.

well maybe if all the non-meta plans didn’t suck and weren’t just silly gimmicks

Holding at cave entrance/cadehugging at FOB or lifeboats all the time is more fun than non-meta plans?

Mfw the non-meta plan is sending two squads to wipe in order to force an early FOB siege for an hour and try to win off of late join reinforcements and siege defense kills.

(Perfectly fun for both the marines who were sent to wipe and perma at op start and the marines who get to sit behind cades for an hour)
