Thing is, I believe that both Naval Ranks and Marine Ranks could work together.
It’d be nice if the Almayer had a naval commander and stuff - while the Marines had their own battalion commander. Naval personnel of the Almayer would be naval ranks; medical department would be naval.
The Marines, explicitly, would have proper Marine Corps ranks; a Major or a Colonel could give briefs and would command -the marines- explicitly. They would have almost no say over how the USS Almayer is run or the operations of the Almayer’s crew.
“My Ass Rides In Naval Equipment” is a joke for a reason – Marine Battalions are often temporarily attached to and ferried around in Naval ships, crewed by Naval personnel. So you get a mix of sailors and Marines.
The Marines often stay in their birthing areas while the sailors run and maintain the ship.
Regarding the CL, kind of separate from the ranking system discussion but…
The CL does lack a real avenue for handling extremely anti-W-Y COs or a hostile/uncooperative Research beyond writing an angry fax which never gets followed up on.
I’ve played my share of CL and can say I’ve written some pretty decent faxes and yet had far less success compared to (paraphrasing) the “Please help. CO Is being hostile and I need PMCs ASAP for reasons” types. It’s annoying as hell too when you have a real need for help or simply W-Y backing you up on something and there is zero response in any form (ARES, W-Y warship, lawyer, W-Y HC Announcement, goons or PMCs etc).
In any case, I really have no clue how to solve that without it hurting Research, requiring new mechanics, or requiring more impact and response to faxes lol. It’s weird because it’s a role with zero real power unless an admin backs them up or people play along…but can massively change rounds for better or worse (in both the sense of actual round enjoyment by players and/or actual ability to win an operation).
The stuff that results from their RP/admin backing also has a pretty varied amount of possibilities. It’s hard to predict how exactly a CL might change a round through their actions - if they even change it (which they usually don’t). Because of this, you also can’t just use a blanket solution to increase fax responses like “WL players can respond to faxes” or something.
CC and CL have nothing to do because you are faxing admins and the admins need to give two shits about it compared to watching the 150 other morons.
CC is easier because you are groundside taking pictures. If anything it needs a cameraman and reporter dynamic to make it truly interesting.
CL all you do is send angry faxes to the void and just PRAY some admin or mod will deem it a good use of time to actually do something with it. That is why i honestly dont play CL because i dont want to make faxes to the void. I want to actually have those read and responded too.
Still dunno why devs are so opposed to naval ranks, despite popular opinion wanting them back.

??? If 80% wanted something back half a year ago, and that thing is LITERALLY just a gimmick change that has no real balance impact, why would people change their minds? I guarantee if you ran this poll again, most people wouldn’t have changed their minds at all.
Furthermore, the actual change away from naval ranks was literal years ago. It was unpopular then, it’s unpopular now.
People hate change, even when in retrospect it was a good one, I didn’t support it then and I do now.
80% of some guys on the forums (not the majority of players) wanted something back half a year ago (again, that’s enough time to change your mind about it), clearly every single person to ever play CM hates new ranks.
What I mean was the fact the naval rank removal was unpopular back when it was proposed, and was still unpopular by the time of this poll, years afterwards. It’s only been 6 months, which is relatively little compared to the time between the PR and the poll.
Can you elaborate what do you support in this change? Like what are upsides of the current rank system?
People hate changes, this is true, but people hate unreasonable changes even more, e.g. military medbay. Both military medbay and current army ranks were nothing but a whim. There was no good reason for these changes then, nor there is one now.
Most people simply don’t care, but I am pretty sure if we count only people who care we’ll get the same majority.
Correct so fucking fix the ranks department heads should be captain and so should be major co should be lt. col, col. Hell I will fix the fucking code.
The switch was made horribly the ranks are all fucked up we as of right now we would be a single company where we should be a ship with 4 companies on board.
If the wiki’s little diagram is still correct, we’re 2nd battalion “Falling Falcons”, A company, 2nd platoon.
(Which is somewhat oversized currently due to 1st platoon being merged into 2nd after getting fucked up during Tychon Tackle)
Additionaly the Falcons only have three companies, two of which are probably on other ships.
