Whitelists: How to Confuse a Job Application With a Video Game

Hey, ‘team’.

So, I’ve spent some time flipping through whitelist apps, and come to find a few interesting commonalities;

  1. I’ve seen players with hours equivalent to a semester of medical school get declined – MD school. Physician College. For roles. On a video game. As fictional robots, aliens, and gunnery sergeants.
  2. Requirements are incredibly vague, only for a council member to request something you were never asked for. Not unlike a Medical program, but…
  3. The tone of these requirements are incredibly lax, but the desired response is not unlike a job application. Again, on a video game.
  4. Probably the single most unwelcoming community I’ve ever met, if you don’t have an SEA to cling to. But, hey, 160 players will stay forever. Probably.

I think it’s interesting that, on a really obscure micro-corner on the internet, a really neat community has been cultivated. I genuinely think this is a cool place. But. I think it’s so odd that the WL process is simultaneously ‘Professional’ and ‘Vibes’, whereso even if you are good at a role, that’s never really tested if you didn’t type the right words. I work in an OR with a cosmetic surgeon as a circulating nurse, and the requirements listed for it are, surprisingly, lesser than a WL’s seems to be. It was my first nursing job, nobody needed to get to ‘know me’, beyond an interview, and seeing that I graduated as a Registered Nurse. My course was about 3000 hours, give or take, including clinicals.

But, I don’t think it’s interesting that niche spaces develop little micro air bubbles to insulate against anything or anyone outside. In fact, it’s par for the course of an obscure internet game. I have to say, my experience with the people here has been about 85% being insulted, or otherwise told I was ‘lacking’. And, the funny thing is, its always the Corpsmen that stand there staring at the PTs in cardiac arrest, not injecting drugs, suturing, or grafting, that have the most to say – The players that aren’t actually on the ball, that are the most verbal.

  1. Sincerely some of the most fun I’ve had in a while, sandbagged by humans being humans every now and again. Considering I was named after a character from the first ‘Alien’, it kinda makes sense I’d gravitate towards this. I’m super glad my friends pulled me into SS13, and I decided to go exploring for servers.

So, I dunno, CM-SS13. I guess I’m glad Dawntrail is coming out? I plan on enjoying my time here, probably not re-applying, until the expac drops.

You mean majors, Gunnery sarges are Mentor which is technically not a whitelist.

Just saying, the process is obtuse and quite unfriendly. The quotes to each individual forum even acknowledge it :innocent:

I may, I may not. I really enjoy the server, but its very interesting that WLs are taken so seriously. Like, of course, I get that quality needs to be maintained, you’re allowing people into trusted support/mentor roles, and that can really effect how new players and experienced players alike will ‘feel’ the round. Doesn’t mean it’s not goofy, as a bigger gate, a bigger gaslight, and the biggest girlboss is still ALIENating. Hah.

But the arguments I see councils make, are very often ‘Yeah idk just because’. While the other people are like ‘This guy saved my kid from a house fire! +1’, ‘This guy literally saved my marriage! +1’, ‘This guy killed the queen, then fixed my IB, rebuilt cades, and built a dropship to fly me home! +1’ and then you see someone below like

Hello [name]

While I feel the 48375745394 hours you’ve put in are very passionate, I saw you used surgical tools out of order one time, and that really cast a shadow upon your application. Additionally, I saw you prioritize things a slightly different way than I would’ve, and [Insert highly gatekept support role] is very serious, and requires utmost performance. I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to decline! You can reapply starting 09/27/2099, you might want to start training your grandchildren now so they have enough experience hours to fulfill this unpaid, imaginary role. Thanks!

This is just meant as criticism, and a poke at the absurdity. And, TBH, only I can be blamed for how my WL was written, though my autism did likely lead me to interpret the requirements a little differently

Hey I wish you all the best, if only more people were support mains IRL the world would be a better place. You must of put in a lot of hard work and sacrifice to dedicate so many hours to your course and pass, well done.

But omfg what a post, I mean it’s one thing to rage about vamp lurkers in D-chat but this is just something else. This just makes me appreciate the CO/Synth/Pred whitelist councillors even more and goes to show the whole whitelist process is in a great state right now and is probably under appreciated by the community.

I did! It was pretty draining, but I love what I do, and I wake up every day eager to work. Like, yeah, its a little self-inserty to play medical, but I do enjoy seeing things I enjoy being reflected back at me in vidya

As stated above, this is a pretty sardonic critique, but it isn’t intended to be much more. Nobody really takes a ‘I found this process frustrating’ post very seriously. I just feel like the WL applications should be a bit more literal, and like I posted above, I probably didn’t do the best job on mine. And, frankly, my own WL app is probably 15% of this frustration. Telling someone ‘hey, these are your writing bounds’ is better than ‘Write a story outlining an interaction’ or whatever the quote is.

And, I only have this strong of an opinion because I’ve spent time running larger roleplay groups, and perhaps its just a difference of views; If someone applied for a more specialized role in my group, I had them apply, sure. But I spent time with them, making SURE they had the right idea as to how the role – Say, Quartermaster – functioned, and they had a grasp of it’s scope. That they could consider the breadth, and everyday function they would perform, even if they were unaware of it. And, very often, I’d weed out people who just thought it’d be fun.

Synth Senator gives you a solid and well-written feedback to your application and you make fun of him like this and you’re saying that they’re unwelcoming, what makes you think that you’re deserving a warm welcome when you behave like that?

Nice cut and paste.

I wasn’t referring to him, it’s kinda…collective? I dunno, I feel like its SS13 as a whole, has a tendency to breed people that know their role – god, they know their role – but they’re unfriendly and disinterested in letting you learn. This specifically was referring to some Nurse/Doctor, and especially the way some HMs act.

And, specifically on this, I mean to say…

I have had three, total, good character encounters where I’ve needed to learn a role (Because every server does them differently) and someone hasn’t blown me off. The rest, such as my time in Req, I pretty much was ignored and the ASO pulled my armor and gun off, then put me in the cryo when I didn’t know what to do. When I was learning Doctor, the CMO was cool for a round, then some Researcher started griping that I wasn’t going fast enough. While removing embryos. And, this isn’t to mention Corpsmen that walk up to my patient, OD them, then yell that I’m not doing it right – Or when I start suturing, grafting, and patching so their PT will be…below…y’know. 300-400 damage? And we can revive them?

So, no, that wasn’t angled at him. My bits about WL councils are also about what I’ve seen scrolling through Pred/CO/Synth boards, not just my own app.

Hours mean literally nothing, look for Shay Silverlock and read his apps then look about the shit he did LOL. 1 morbillion +1s and 48362837384784 hours in XO alone, and there’s a reason he was gatekept and girl bossed.

The reason the WL you’re applying to is as good as it is, is because of the very things you’re complaining about. Just remember you’re applying to join a sub community and those people are pretty protective of their role because if we let SILLY BILLIES into it again, we lose our fun shit like privileged and the m46c pre-nerf

Btw not saying you’re a silly billy or like Shay I don’t even know who you are or what your app was about/for
