Also, maybe I sympathize with toaster?
Brother in christ. The amount of copium levels is off the charts. I’ve been blown off for staff app before least to say hey a bit upset but hey i controlled it. Your story for starters was not even to the effort of those who put their well for a lack of a better term passion into it. This isn’t a job some people main things a lot for here get this. Fun.
You making a massive list of this stuff doesn’t help you at all. But hey this is just a funny space game just give it a rest, Think it over, DM Senators or Councillors in the related whitelist of what to do, think, then try again.
I agree that feedback can be braindead sometimes. “+1 really cool guy” coming from someone you’re most likely a friend with outside the game.
However, as steel point said, we have NOTHING to go off besides your personality and words.
I work in an OR with a cosmetic surgeon as a circulating nurse, and the requirements listed for it are, surprisingly, lesser than a WL’s seems to be. It was my first nursing job, nobody needed to get to ‘know me’, beyond an interview, and seeing that I graduated as a Registered Nurse. My course was about 3000 hours, give or take, including clinicals.
Yes because 3000 hours is less than a WL requirements. I remember when the pred WL demanded 3000 hours just for xeno! The outrage was unreal. I digress though, you have proven you are a capable person by sinking all that time and money into becoming an RN. There are also consequences. They trust you will not abuse your power because if you do, you can lose your status as an RN or face legal consequences, such as years in jail. Here if you abuse your whitelist… nothing happens except you get laughed at and kicked out. No real repercussions.
The requirements are not more than a real world job - rather they are different and you’re just new to it. Next time, reach out.
Some things:
I think the feedback on your app was founded in places, and yea you kind of have to roll with whatever critiques The People give you when you post an app for a WL in ANY ss13 server. Sucks a lot. Doesn’t feel good. Not to make assumptions too, but i also know it can be hard for many people when literal guidelines aren’t supplied; either because you only expect what is Right There to be required or because you hem and haw over all the secret hidden implicit things being asked about and can’t 100% certainly decipher what the secret sauce is so you settle for brevity instead of trying to out-guess an application and getting all long winded and off-track. It’s inherent to the niche ss13 video game obscure in-group culture going on and frankly a lot of people participate to justify their time spent on the game and make them feel like it was worth it because theyre knowledgable, and they can quantify their knowledge in comparison to others who know Less. and if you work and come back to this it’s like. Yeah. It seems petty relative to having a Job and doing this for a Hobby. My best advice is to slow your roll, though i know no one likes waiting. Let the next app be a 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 month project you build up over time. Write an outline, then return to it once a week to add one sentence here, one there. Or, even, think about whether applying is worth it; you pointed out part of what confused you (or perhaps bothered you?) about synth was the need for navigating diamterically opposed positions; being deep but also…not too deep. and like, sometimes it’s not worth getting into because ss13 only translates things To An Extent and there’s a GREAT deal of Flattening that has to happen so characters fit into the timeframe + interactivity of a round. Not because i think you can’t do that; just because i find shoehorning something i really care about (medical knowledge, maybe in your case) into this medium to kind of lose dimensionality and become a caricature.
I will tell you that you will never post an app and feel good, in ss13. There are always “things to do better”. There are always evaluations that seem to weigh you-the-person over you-the-contributor-to-this-game-community. There’s always enhanced observation of you, your skills, your behavior after you post. If that unpleasantness isn’t worth it (and it isn’t for, remember this, the majority of people who play this game), then there’s nothing wrong with playing as anyone else does. No one thinks less of a squaddie main.
But second and probably worth keeping in mind is you’ve got, i assume, your bsn already and all your clinical. Most people playing ss13 and playing INTENSELY are in college or fresh out or still doing training. And put a lot of stake and identity in this game (true of whatever ss13 server of your choice). So part of that comes to defensiveness about esoteric knowledge because it gives people self worth and self confidence to be an Expert at something, or to identify as an X main or a Y WL haver, and i think thats understandable and natural especially given the age group of many players, and so none of it is worth taking too, too harshly, i think. The critiques are a reflection of your perceived effort in the game and/or your application. Not you.
And yea, as others have said: the councillors…well, theyre around to help you navigate the structure they expect for the apps? It seems self-defeating almost, like doesn’t that defeat the purpose of this long winded app? It’s the kind of intellectual chess game equivalent to going to a professor’s office hours or something for help before an exam, though. You have to reach out to show you’re interested to do a meta-setup to then get help to do the thing to then actually be evaluated. For better or worse.
Fwiw you write really well. Keep that close.
Im sympathetic but also if you really want this, dont hold yourself back. Talk to the people that need to be talked to, play the jobs that have to be played, [don’t make the forum posts that don’t need to be made?]. A fellow WLer on a different server put it as simple as it is: it’s a popularity contest. Treat as such and make lots of friends.
Howdy, as someone who was and stil kinda am, an active SEA player. This completely misunderstands the point of both mentors and SEA.
While I agree, if you are new to certain roles you are met with some hostility, a lot of it is in the moment.
A lot of Medical for example, can ruin peoples rounds.
Mentor’s are, community members first- we are not some special class of people. We are just active players who applied to receive tools to help others. SEA, and MentorHelp being the main tools.
You also confused ranks here, its Major. Gunnery Sergeants are just one of the ranks an SEA can be.
I for example, play as first sergeant.
I applied a total of four times to get the WL, it took an entire year for me to get the role of Synth.
You should always keep trying, if you genuinely want the role for the right reasons.
But from this thread, and your overall reaction to being denied for not meeting exceptions, reflects horribly on your later apps(if you ever do apply again). It screams that you do not know how to take valid criticism, or handle emotions when things are not in your favor. To be blunt this is a glorified cope thread.
no1. rule of any WL here, is if it is denied- learn from it and try and get better understanding as too why it got denied. Not in a fit of anger, not fueled by emotion- but a genuine willingness to meet expectations.
and this is why i will never argue about getting rejected because getting it from 30 different ways does not feel good
Yeah lmao, some of the replies in this are just embarrassing. “Bro just invest 8 hours a day in CM for two months like how I did” ignoring the fact that people have to work.
Better yet the WL defense squad, the divide is clear between old councillors who openly state “yeah I’m still here just to gatekeep” in the discord, and new WL’ers who go “Noooo it’s not about maintaining ego and gatekeeping!!!”
It’s especially funny when its replies like “I saw you make X minor error” or anything about hours. How much esoteric knowledge is there about jobs that you don’t learn from either 1) being in game for a few rounds as the job or 2) if it’s hidden enough, codediving or having someone tell you it. I can’t think of many examples of stuff in game that aren’t one or the other.
i will admit i am probably never gonna go for a wl because i know with my ban history dear lord i will be considered a goddamn criminal if that gets accepted also yea i just feel like anything that has to do with hours it will most likely make you look like a fool in the community
Synths need to be absolutely impeccable at all medical and most engineering tasks- it’s what we expect. It’d be jarring if a synth made a mistake a rookie doctor would, for example. Ideally you want players who are experts at it, and who can be trusted to RP well and not lose their marbles.
The majority of the playerbase wouldn’t fit all these criteria, but synthetic is a highly desirable role because you get to play as a sapient toaster- Hence, you literally have to gatekeep it.
Could the WL council be improved? Yes.
Is it perfect? No.
Are some WL council members literal neverplayers who exist solely to retain a sense of authority? Yes.
Does the council do the job pretty well, overall? Yes. I haven’t met a single synthetic who was actually problematic RP & skill-wise when interacted with (albeit the whole quirk thing seems kinda pointless when 90% of synths essentially act the same).
I would hardly call the application process obscure. The WL senators (and other people) sit in the discord and are more than happy to assist with anyone who wants help with their WL application. Seriously- There’s no better way to get feedback and maximise your odds of getting in then asking WL holders & senators how you can improve on something. There’s even a whole channel dedicated for it! No one likes rejection, and every person with a WL went through the arduous process of making the app. They get it.
You got your feedback, and you’ve been given information. Just improve on your skills and your next app, and try again. There’s people who’ve been rejected multiple times to get in, iteratively improving each time.
And well, yeah. It’s a video game. That’s why only roles that aren’t actually needed are WLd. Every job has minimal entry requirements besides the CO (XO but with a cooler gun), synthetic (glorified ASO with surgery skills) and predator (observer mode but allowed to grief).
If you think about it, it’s really not a big deal at all. It’s just something “nice to have”.
EDIT: I looked through your application, and well- I don’t really get where the sense of “hostility” comes from, you got like an entire page-worth of feedback each from two seperate WLers who were quite friendly.
They gave encouragement to re-apply once you understood what you needed to do, and pointed you to valuable resources (councillor DMs, #whitelist-help, etc.).
It seems to me they were very cordial, and they actually gave a lot more feedback to you than they usually do. It seems you misunderstood what was expected, and you wrote your WL application based purely off the template (which is minimalistic in terms of instructions), without seeking any help from anyone else, or looking at accepted WL applications to see what you should do.
This is part of what I was getting at. I, absolutely, see these things as issues – Sure, there can be CORE MALFUNCTIONS that show you are not ready to matriculate, but.
I stand by the WL gatekeeping being essentially, as stated higher in the thread, a popularity contest. Which, that’s fine, but explain it as such. I just think the requirements should be better listed, that’s all.
You can call it a cope thread, I call it reasonable agitation at vagueness of instruction, and receiving criticism based on it. This probably agitates me so much because it reminds me of how preceptors would want me to do something I’ve read about, but never done, then they gripe I didn’t do it the best I could.
For the fifth time.
I don’t seem to have access to the areas where everyone is ‘sitting and waiting’ because, if i did, i would’ve asked questions prior. I do not have the channels. I have checked, they are not there, I cannot see anyone in the server. I have Takyon VC, the void text chats, and updates. That’s it.
STEEL YOU CANT KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH PUTTING THE PERFECT MEMES WHERE THEY BELONG
Poor guy really thought that synth, the ultimate support weapon, the role that is detrimental to many other player’s experiences with the round, should be available to anyone who asks… It’s so synthover
Weird, show me where I said that
I already verified. I have been verified. The channels being mentioned are not there.
I do not have access. It’s not any channel I’m in, nor one I could be in. This is why I did not know there was a whole avenue in which I could get pointers first.
I’ll have my top guy remove the link so that you can re-verify. Be sure to use the wiki I linked earlier for instructions
