YES, XENOS CAN SEE CLOAKED SCOUTS

Something I’ve noticed that players new to Scout struggle with is figuring out how exactly the xenos keep finding and killing them when they’re cloaked.

You are painfully obvious behind walls.

Xenos see normally, but also have the ability to see marines through walls. When you’re behind a wall, your cloaked sprite appears over a pure black background, which makes you painfully obvious. In direct view, you at least blend a bit with the environment. Behind walls, you stick out like a sore thumb.

The humble xeno player maxing their monitor brightness to find the Scout.

I don’t do that and I can still see them every time

But I also have an HDR monitor, which naturally increases the distinction between contrasts.

Here’s a visual aid I made ages ago to help someone understand this

Both of these images contain an image of a clown at 10% opacity. Which one do you see first?

Thats why, instead of depending on the Scout cloak utility to save you, you burst fire impact any T1 or T2 near the unga ball using your insane rifle and send them straight to dchat.

yup and its damn pain. frankly i would take a M4RA custom nerf if it meant fixing wall sight issue with the cloak… there is reason that warriors are the second most common killers of scouts, they got lunge that counters the impact rounds and tend be be camping behind doors and walls. (if you want to know the number one killers of scouts… its hugger traps.)

Its a big reason why i always examine xenos before engaging with them when playing as scout. If its a prime or ancient runner/lurker/warrior they will likely have their monitor settings tweaked to see you easily. If its a recognizable xeno name i will also avoid and go for the more oblivious xenos.

wait waaaaaaaaat

I hate trying to spot lurkers on my monitor. When I look at a lurker or scout I literally can never see it on most terrain because it just blends in nearly completely. The contrast is just that unnoticeable. CM should really have a inbuilt contrast setting tbh

It also matters a lot if xenos are actively searching for a scout in that area.

It’s why if you feel that xenos think you are in that area, that you BAIL and don’t stick around. Going back to Drawsstuff’s image with the clown, do you think you’d still notice the clown if you weren’t asked to see which one you see first, or at least spot it when first looking at it?

Why are you tweaking your monitor settings gang. Just set your NVGs to max and you will always see scouts and Preds behind the walls.

Someone post the Stalkerino meme created by the haters. You know the one boys. That is a funny one.

I have/had a similar problem. I could detect lurkers at close range but at range you are The Invisible Man.

I’ve got a fairly cheap screen and I can’t see scouts through walls at all, like, at ALL, I’ve had people post screenshots of it with an arrow pointing to the guy and even zoomed in squinting, nothing. Pretty interesting.

I can see them on normal terrain okay, not great not terrible.

The vision test I grabbed from an earlier post. The scout is right in the middle of that 3x3 black space.

Is this really how it looks ingame? The black is ~0% lightness and the most visible pixel on the scout is ~2%, with most of it being ~1% or <1%. I can’t see it unless I majorly mess up my monitor settings/calibration.

yeah, nothing, opening in a new tab, zooming way in, totally blank black.

edit: tinkering with the color settings on my screen I could get it to just barely show up normally, there was one like, “kindle” preset that made the screen look like shit but made the scout stick out like a sore thumb. I guess the meme about xenos tweaking their monitors to see scouts is real.

Neither. Because clowns don’t exist.

If you want a genuine tip, in the Windows searchbar, type ‘Calibrate Display Color’, and then try changing the settings, you may need to tweak it continually to get it perfect, but its better than just turning the brightness up and down. It worked for me on my old laptops.
