As a charlie main for many years, I really don't like how ASS kneecaps us for no reason and we are given nothing in exchange

I’ll admit, I have mixed feeling on the ASS system. While I am sad to see Charlie reduced to effectively a fireteam, I truly do believe it will in the end be a good change overall. I believe that squad specializations will be the key to making the smaller, more flexible squads both effective, but also more meaningful.

If the specialization are going to be set in stone, I humbly request that Charlie be made the Medical Squad, cause Grape Gang Medics are awesome! Bravo Medics are a close second. Sorry Delta, I still love you.

I understand.

Squad Specializations is where I hope ASS goes next.

Getting to pick between something like:

  • Medical where you get extra Corpsman and maybe some interesting utility items to help secure the dead easier (I vote this becomes Charlie’s shtick)
  • Recon specialty where you go for light armor and weapons for speed or something (Kilo for this one)
  • Heavy weapons where HPRs, M2Cs, and other big guns take center stage (Oscar for this)

Couple this with an emphasis on actually paying attention to orders (whether mandated or simply followed by community expectations at a grassroots level) would be super duper neat and actually make me want to play SL more than currently.

So, there’s a few things that need to be addressed here

First of all other than the breakfast gimmick, people can kindly stop prettending that charlie squad’s gameplay was any different to Alpha or Delta’s.

Charlie squad is not being removed and will still exist although as part of the support part of the new system.

Squad identities have for the most part died more than 5 years ago.

The only squad that is somewhat different is just bravo which has the stigma of always being deployed on FOB construction, and even then the bigger portion of the squad will be leaving to fight up front. In the case of Smartgunners or Specs it is -always- the case, which also raises the question of why does the FOB team need to take a specialist or smartgunner from the front team?

With that being said.

The “support” squads are in fact intended to be some of the more objective oriented squads in the game under this system. Typical assignments you can expect from command players will be for the initial part of the round, securing secondary objectives such as power or comms, clearing out the backline and for the latter part covering a flank or opening a flank tangent to the front/assault team.

In other words, you can expect the kind of activities where a more compact and better organized team would do well at.

If you wanted RP, you will get a lot more of it this way than being in a cave push with what will be considered the main assault component.

To boil it down, charlie squad is not being deleted, but as part of the support section, the kind of tasks you will get are going to be more objective focused and less so being just another color in the unga-ball mix.

You can still have breakfast.
You can still build an identity.
You can still do roleplay.
And you will be getting the kind of objectives that require you to work together, be organized and maintain cohesion, more so than when charlie was just another squad in the deathball in the ungamix.

It’s not the end of the world, just give it a new try with this in mind.

nobody said this would remove breakfast or roleplay, the problem I have was removing spec/SG and giving it to another squad, thus hamstringing my favorite squad despite it being just as much of an ‘assault’ squad as alpha and delta

AMR/Sniper/SADAR/SG etc are maximally effective in target rich frontline objectives, can they help in small objectives? one or two of them but not all of them sure; but 90% of the time they are going to go where the queen is or the best environment for their toolset.

Charlie has a chance to become even more tightknit then ever before, the people in the squads generally want to be there and are interested in sticking together; making them a lot more lethal then just hoping the SADAR will choose follow the SL and not just go to where the ‘front’ is like every SG/Spec gravitates towards.

If in your mind charlie is only effective because it has those things, then it sounds like “charlie” is just another squad with specs and sgs.

cohesion is worth a lot more then a powerweapon.

Unit Cohesion is deadly.

If you were paying attention to the very first A.S.S designs or testing, we had specs in charlie/kilo/oscar, which is something I wanted, but after thorough testing it just didn’t work, the specs would ALWAYS leave and it would be bad for coherency. I have no interest in a system where the natural order mandates people ditching their squads.

As for specializations, it is something staff and myself are interested in exploring, however I think the right thing to do is see what niche/archetypes for the new squads manifest naturally and then lean into that behavior from there.

Yeah but we can’t even get into Charlie because of the pop lock on KOC :frowning:

As a Delta marine it pains me to see Charlie squad reduced.

Instead it should be 100% wiped out.

mom! mom!!! i made it to the minor leagues!!!

pour one out for the #1 charlie sg tho @Ardicil; i feel ur pain

on the other hand….the likelihood of me being aSL SG will go down…exponentially…silver linings, people!

EDIT: i just want to add that forcing the SG into alpha is cruel and unusual punishment, i think all SGs should go to delta and none should go to alpha, i hate that squad and they leave me for dead all the time, FUK ALFA! :fu:

IMO playing ass these past rounds i believe that there is literally no difference between charlie and the current fragmented charlie (ASS) right now except that they made comms harder.

Charlie for me (when i play as CIC) has always been the backline or do whatever the fuck command wants them to do.

If devs or the staff wants ARPEE stuff then give people incentives or time to ARPEE.

I believe removing queen scree is one of a step on those directions

Because are we really clowning ourselves? UNGABALL is the only way to beat queen scree. So marines are in fucking ultra tryhard shit mode to win so people become NRP and just mindlessly rush xenos.

ASS is there to “improve ARPEE and skill level” but all that it did was just add more comms to our radio and establish alpha/delta as frontline and bravo as FOB duty.

Might as well we have no CIC and make SLs fire their own OB. not gonna lie.

Also if you guys want to improve RP too then start making people line up after the dropship lands. People lack discipline and community shit nowadays and everyone wants to shoot instead (im guilty of this too)

tl;dr remove queen scree (find another solution) = RP improves = less tryharding and ungaballing , make people line up when dropship arrives instead of going directly to metahive location = everyone is happy

EDIT 2 More queen scree coping :

Also some people saying ASS is like so that the squads have autonomy.

No. They dont. Once that fucking prime queen starts abusing the fuck out of scree and all xeno castes doing drag capture theyll be forced into frontlines. Which literally makes no difference

There’s definitely a chance that once the update becomes more used to the playerbase, it becomes more of a novelty or a gimmick that only happens in the first 30 minutes of the round. Past that, it could really just become “SUPPORT SQUADS CHARGE QUEEN WITH ALPHA AND DELTA”

Moreover I’m not sure how frequent this is, but I’ve also noticed when I played Charlie squad is in comparison to the other squads? Maybe it’s the new occurence of there being other squads right now so people play those more likely, but I’ve played rounds where Kilo and Oscar were unlocked and they had actually talking marines while the Charlie marines were basically mutes and didn’t even fill up the 8-marine limit. I think this is in part because Charlie’s mains generally tend to be support-oriented players (HM, SG, CT, FTO, etc.) rather than Privates but however due to the limited slots they are now pretty much spread out throughout the other 5 squads rather than filling Charlie slots.

Overall I’m still pretty mixed regarding this change. It’s definitely a good idea to have more Echo-esque squads where they’re more tight-knit, and being introduced every round that they’re available rather than a gimmick by whoever is CO at the time will definitely inspire more ARPEE and PLAYER CULTURE regarding the squads. (Being honest though, it’ll just make that for whoever the Support squads and Bravo is.)

i’ve determined actually i hate ass, i cannot share my preps with another SG, philip staymates shoved me over and embarrassed me in front of all of delta squad when it was supposed to be my homecoming; please patch him out of the game or at least his pompadour. i can’t stand to see it again.

kinda into the support squads though. not sure how i feel about all the UNGA from A+D but the support stuff is good.

ive been playing tons of rounds since ASS was first TM’d and now; it depends on the SL and people involved,…no reason to rush the queen when you’re a team of 7 people whos contribution is more meaningful when you’re doing what command wants, a kilo round I was ordered to hold north comms when we went for nuke. we did not change positions once, another round as kilo we were ordered to hold stairs on ice colony to flank the queen and hive on retreat and we did and it worked….tons more rounds where I’ve seen the Aux Squads doing what theyre told or have participated in it. if they dont they can be ahelped and will get punished for not using their roles properly.

After SLing and XOing with ASS. I literately cannot see CM moving forward without it.
While now Charlie is simply more often than not, the Comms protection squad. I like it, it gives it more identity - and Thwomp has openly spoken about adding more things to the squads once they’ve got their cultures, to make them more specialized. The only thing I will miss is the less charlie numbers i’ll see in a given round, but - the players that I know, are still there so it doesn’t matter a whole lot.
