Description of the incident:

In interest of keeping things brief, I’m trying to strip unnecessary details:

I was playing Chief Engineer. I was teaching a new player - Kore Eckard - the ropes of Colonial Marines in a role I hoped would have little conflict or aggravation: Maintenance Technician.

On our (myself as Timber, and Eckard) way to learn how to reload the OB cannon, I had a verbal dispute with MT Fuchs in the hangar. Fuchs punched Eckard for some reason, so I clobber’d them to send a message: pointedly with fists only and with no intention of drawing blood.

Gramps entered in, and to the best of my knowledge and with no announcement joined the fight between three MTs . . . by punching Eckard, who I don’t recall joining in to my and Fuch’s melee. I proceed to wrestle with Fuchs and Gramps at the same time with Eckard providing mild assistance - again, they’re new: so they weren’t actively or skillfully engaging - before another marine joined in. I guided the fight to medbay so that these maniacs wouldn’t kill my poor trainee if things got violent. Blood was drawn, bones broken, but eventually the fight fizzled out with combination XO and admin intervention. As I realized I was conspicuously without one, I grabbed a handgun from a squad preperation for self-and-newb-defense in the case that another fight broke out while I was training Eckard. I also prepare cable-cuffs, as we were without MPs at the time.

I encounter Gramps in the hallway just outside of medical, and though I’m working with yesterday’s memories: I recall telling him something along the lines of “If you apologize to my trainee for assaulting them, I’ll pretend to forgive you for what you did.” They draw a machete and begin doing . . . senile rambling roleplay, I suppose. I pull my handgun out, and advise them to put the machete away. They comply, and I return the favor. A crowd forms including the round’s CL, and Ducksworth. While I continue to try and coax an apology out of Gramps as I - their superior officer - and my trainee were both assaulted by them, he continues his senile roleplay: stating that he does not recognizing anybody around him, where he is, what’s going on, and speaking in a near-intelligible accent. Ducksworth meanwhile attempts to console Gramps.

Eckard returns from their medical treatment and expresses distress at their treatment, and Gramps promptly states that he has no remorse for what he did and that it was necessary. Eckard leaves to find something else to do. Shortly after, Gramps offers me a duel as an apology: “You can accept my dead body as a sorry, or yours as a lack of one.”

I am onboard, this sounds like fun. However, my character IC and myself in LOOC both state that we need ‘High Command’ (an adminhelp) for permission first. As Firecharge responds to the ticket and negotiates down to rubber rounds for the Mod88 for the duel over live rounds, Gramps in LOOC begins saying things such as “you don’t need to adminhelp a duel because then they’ll just deny it” and other messages discouraging me from trying to get staff permission first, before calling me a ‘snitch’ and wandering off stating that a fight with rubber rounds was ‘not a real duel.’

Eckard states frustration with her treatment and abuse IC to the ship over radio and OOC to myself, and cryoes. As I joined the round to help tutor them, I follow shortly after being assaulted by a third person, and depositing my valuable equipment to Req.

I’m not writing a report about a fight I won, or someone roleplaying in a way I found personally annoying: It’s Colonial Marines. What bothered me was a specific cocktail of things: While fights happen, Gramps joined one involving exclusively a separate department from himself, and started by targeting someone who wasn’t actively involved in it. When encountered later, he pulled a machete on a superior officer with little hesitation. Finally, out of character, they tried to discourage me from getting admin’s permission to act outside of sane and reasonable expectations for our characters, trying to accelerate in-character as well. Overall, what they did led to a new player becoming discouraged and frustrated with the round, and attempted to either trick or pressure another player into doing something that was worthy of a note if not a ban, all while playing a character too mentally ill to respect, identify, or interact with a superior officer but not so much as to not assault them.

This behavior was not fun. I do not play Timber often and Eckard was new, so there was no rapport to play off of. Gramps displayed that they knew their behavior would not be approved of or allowed by staff, and pushed to go along with it anyways. Their behavior left a negative impact and experience on a new player.

(The round could have also been 17010, as I’m working off the most recent round after a message I left in #cm-discussion).

(Also, sorry for any mis-understandings, i’m posting this at around 1:00 AM after a hard week).

Hey, I am Christopher Fuchs and I believe I was a Rifleman during this round, I do not know if you meant that I was also meta-gaming, since you only included one name. Though, I can share my account with the experience.

I meant to disarm Eckard(?) and then I had an a-help about it, MrDadMan can confirm the a-help. I have no idea who Gramps is and I thought the marine was a different person who just wanted to join in, though- they did not seem to be my ‘friend’ as they were also disarming me multiple times.

Once the ‘brawl’ was done with and XO and me weren’t arguing, I saw you talking in LOOC about a duel, checking if it’s okay in a-helps, something about a duel of some sorts, one that you tried to handle ICly to settle the ‘beef’ off. I only have one photo of the round and it’s me saying “My life is complete” after putting on a skull mask, which is literally tiles away from your beef, though I did not capture it.

Also, please clarify if you think that me and Silverton are Metagaming, as I have seen them around but not interacted almost at all with them.

This ahelp was not meant for you, no: our drama was handled by staff in-game. The ‘meta-gaming’ accusation towards Gramps is due to the fact that their fascination with the duel seemed to begin an end with potentially killing me (or being killed, to be fair) against server rules, and behind admin’s backs, and then trying to push me to go through with it when I raised concerns about server rules.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience though, and I hope you’re at the start of a kind weekend and easier week!

Hi there, just made an account and wanted to say: Eckard was me! I’m very new to SS13 and even newer to CM, but not to roleplay in general.

With that out of the way, I’d like to corroborate Arty’s report and account of events. Additionally, I want to add a short summary of the same events from my own point of view, with a couple additional details.

So, to start, Arty and I join into a fresh round and she starts by telling me what we’ll be doing as we walk, and we run into Fuchs. I don’t even recall what prompted him to call one of us a retard, it was kind of overshadowed by everything that followed. Timber indeed responded, as Arty said, by telling Fuchs to watch his mouth, to which Fuchs then began combat without another word. This seemed like extremely rapid escalation.

Now, nosugarplumnovember has stated that Fuchs was trying to disarm me, and I suppose that could make sense as a preventative measure, but my hands were empty and I hadn’t even said anything yet. As Arty said, Gramps then joined without saying anything. I’d only just learned how to actually use the harm intent, and gave maybe two punches to Gramps because I was worried about Timber.

The rest of what Arty said follows pretty much to the letter, including that I barely fought back and only to defend myself. Most of the time I was trying to de-escalate, explain what happened, complain about the situation, and try to get people to stop beating me. Like, seriously, I joined into this round, hadn’t done anything yet, and immediately got clobbered by four separate people (one of them multiple times because of Gramps) unprovoked over the course of maybe thirty minutes? I know the game can be a bit chaotic from all the stories Arty’s told me, but this was completely wild and not how I would have preferred to try and learn to play. First combatant was Fuchs, then Gramps, then a random marine I don’t remember the name of briefly joining in front of the medbay to defend his fellow marine I assume, then even the goddamn medic for several seconds because he saw me trying to defend myself after Gramps chased me down again. He apologized and patched me up after that.

No hard feelings with nosugarplumnovember, but just to summarize, this was a very out-of-control situation that, in my (admittedly green-horned) opinion, probably didn’t need to happen. If Gramps hadn’t been there behaving nonsensically from start to finish, it would have started and ended with Timber defending her trainee from someone being insubordinate.

After which they deploy, where they spend their time mostly fighting a doctor over multiple occasions, including one fight where the machete and guns come into play. The fight seems properly escalated and I don’t feel like more logs are necessary at this rate.

I’m all for shenanigans, but at the end of the day, I agree his roleplay needs to be toned down.
