I am an advocate of VOIP as well. In fact, I will hire an e-girl to do VOIP for me just to mindfuck people like that.
Only through third-party software. While you could theoretically transmit voice over proximity through code fuckery, you can’t actually play it to other players as anything but as MIDI.
I am not sure BYOND accepts audio inputs, either.

Okay TTS may not fit CM, But what about Speech to text? So Instead of standing still for 5 seconds typing a message out, you can Do a Speech to text in 2 for longer?
Can CM even support this kind of function? I wouldn’t know since I’m no game dev, but I doubt that BYOND has speech-to-text support.
I really like TGMC’s blip TTS option, it still uses the voices but TGMC TTS can get extremely overwhelming, especially for your first few rounds in a while, the blip option sidesteps this by sounding like the animal crossing/RPG blip speak.
I really hope any TTS option implemented would take a look at having a blip setting instead of being all or nothing
I mean if you use something like googles speech and just hook it up externaly or internally, it would be nice

I mean it is pretty much possible (pretty easily) through the use of macro’s and an external program but I also havent seen a good speech to text program ever.
IE: press and hold T to have your STT program begin recording (which then writes out into active cursor as most modern ones Id assume have), release T and hit enter when its done.
Issue is is that STT sucks a lot, like a lot a lot, accents destroy it, bad mics destroy it, and most the times with how bad it can fumble what youre trying to say you’d have to just restart and then speak slower which is probably gonna be slower than the average typing speed
I personally thing TTS sounds silly and I’d rather imagine how a character sounds and their way of talking than have a very shitty soulless AI speech voice from tiktok force something upon me.
Also CM very often can have a screen filled with 40+ people talking, including the briefing and dropship which are to be fair some of the only places where roleplay occurs, so imagine that filled up with AI voices - plus people will definitely start using TTS exploits and will fill your ears with WAWAWAWAWAWWAWA or some stupid shit like that.
I personally think it will impact the performance and atmosphere of the game severely in a negative way.

Not possible, adding TTS to CM would mean you have NO CHOICE but to listen to people saying WAWAWA MEOW MEOW MEOW I NEED MORE BOOLETS. This is why we can’t have nice things, people would abuse it, no way in hell to somehow prevent that, no, no way, what a sad world, maybe in a perfect universe it would, but this isn’t a perfect universe.

Yeah gotta agree with jooks here, I prefer imagining how people sound instead of hearing the AI TTS. I feel like TTS isn’t worth the cost and resources involved in it’s implementation.
